  • As we talked about before, Gene is off-balance from the moment he arrives at Devon. He is the outsider, coming from the South. The rest of the boys grew up in the NE area and are part of that culture. Gene is competitive and he is always comparing himself to others, so he thinks that everyone is like that, including Finny. He has gotten the notion that Finny is coaxing him into skipping class and dinner, etc. because Finny wants him to make bad grades as Finny himself does. Actually, Finny only lives in the moment and does what comes naturally to him – like sports. Finny doesn’t have any hidden agendas, as Gene does. By the time they have the argument in their room – when Finny comes in to announce that Leper is going to jump from the tree that night – Gene is convinced of his notion and has lots of built up anger/enmity at Finny. So, when Finny admits he did not know that Gene HAD to study to get good grades, it is an astonishing revelation to Gene. So in a matter of seconds, Gene has gone to hating Finny to being ashamed of himself – he is “off balance.” When they climb the tree afterwards, we don’t know what Gene is thinking. Remember that a few chapters before, when they did their first double jump, it was Gene who lost his balance and Finny who saved him (reflexively). That is foreshadowing. Now they climb the tree again for a double jump. When they are both on the limb, with Gene closes to the trunk, Gene jounces the limb (demonstrate), making Finny fall off and hit the ground. Then Gene calmly walks out on the limb and does the best dive ever into the river. What do you make of that? Therein is the heart of the story – what causes people to “snap” like that and be so insensitive to the cruelty of their actions?
