TERMS OF REFERENCE - PASTORAL WORKER

HMS DRAKE (Families and dependants)

PURPOSE

1)  The Pastoral Worker is appointed to contribute effectively to the work of the Chaplaincy Team at HMS DRAKE. They are also appointed to promote spiritual growth and pastoral wellbeing among service personnel and their dependents in the Plymouth area; providing a link between the HM Naval Base (HMNB) chaplaincy and military families.

JOB DESCRIPTION – HMS DRAKE / HMNB DEVONPORT

2)  The principal duties and tasks of the job are:

a)  Develop relationships with the families and dependants of Naval Personnel and the wider military community

i)  Run and attend coffee mornings and other outreach events.

ii)  To be involved with the planning and execution of the Community Church outreach projects

iii)  To develop new ways to support and befriend the military community within the Plymouth area.

b)  Promote mission both within HMS DRAKE and outside of the Naval base itself, particularly amongst families and dependants

c)  Provide a link to the Naval Christian Fellowship (NCF) and Armed Forces Christian Union (AFCU), promoting activities and events within HMS DRAKEamong the Military community.

d)  Exercise a ministry of visitation to Military ranks in hospital where appropriate.

e)  Offer first-rate pastoral care to service personnel and their dependents, exercising alistening and referral ministry as appropriate.

f)  Contribute to the well-being of all military personnel and their families in Plymouth, through the achievement of the primary purpose.

g)  Contribute to the process of consultation, information exchange, planning and decision making within the Chaplaincy team.

h)  Participate in weekly Team meetings and where possible morning prayers on weekdays..

i)  Promote new ways to extend the ministry of the Chaplaincy.

j)  On request by Chaplaincy assist with baptism/confirmation classes as appropriate

k)  Promote awareness of Aggie Weston’s and of the Pastoral Worker scheme in particular, in order to facilitate work in other establishments.

l)  Develop relationships and promote mission opportunities through attendance at Sunday Worship and afterwards.

ROLE OF Aggie Weston’s

3)  Dame Agnes Weston’s Royal Sailors’ Rests (Aggie Weston’s) is the employer of the PW and is responsible for all matters relating to conditions of employment, qualifications, discipline, leave, pay and welfare.

ROLE OF NCS

4)  Naval Chaplaincy Service (NCS), represented by both HMS DRAKE and HMS RALEIGH Chaplaincy Team Leaders, is the deploying organisation. The CTLs have line management responsibility over the PW on their respective sites. The CTLs may delegate this responsibility to another commissioned Chaplain within the Chaplaincy team. This is currently the incumbent of St Nicholas’ Church

5)  The Haven at HMS DRAKE is supported by the Chaplaincy team and approved by the Naval Base Commander.

TERMS OF SERVICE

6)  This is a full-time post. Hours of duty are 36 per week and include evening and weekend duties under the direction of the line manager.

7)  Any additional hours worked may be taken as time off in lieu, as agreed by the line manager.

8)  The position will carry the status and membership of the Senior Rates Mess.

9)  Civilian dress of a suitable and smart standard will be worn, appropriate to the location and activity. Aggie Weston’s provides polo shirts and fleeces for use by all Pastoral Workers.

10)  The Pastoral Worker will be required to make regular visits to facilities outside the Naval Base by driving a service vehicle when available. Otherwise own car use is required with a full clean driving licence and business use insurance.

11)  Changes to these Terms of Service will require the joint approval of NCS and Aggie Weston’s.

CHILD PROTECTION

12)  The post holder is required to have been cleared by the Disclosure and Barring Service to Enhanced level as a pre-requisite of employment. Clearance will be arranged by Aggie Weston’s.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

13)  The PW is to complete induction training, child protection and protection of vulnerable adults training, and listening skills courses and undertake any other job specific training as agreed with the CTLs. The costs will be borne by the establishment.

14)  The PW is required to attend the annual Aggie Weston’s conference and periodic PW team building development.

15)  Other external training and development may be considered, following discussion with Aggie Weston’s.
