February Edition

We had a busy month in February! We began the month learning about dental health. We had our very own dentist, Missy Rabeni (Dominic’s Mom), come in and give a wonderful lesson on what is good or bad for our teeth and how we can keep our teeth healthy. She even sent home some goodies to help our teeth! Thank you Missy! We also wrote about what we would do if we were the tooth fairy. The kids had fun with this exercise. Remember, when we are writing we are looking for an uppercase letter at the beginning of a sentence, spaces between words, a complete thought, and an end mark. Some students are getting challenged to write two sentences!

Despite a few snow days, we celebrated our 100th day! I would like to thank all the volunteers that came and made our day run smoothly. We were very busy counting to 100 and making different crafts. I cannot believe the year is well over half way done!

We celebrated Valentine’s Day as a class and had fun literacy stations. We talked about how we can show love for one another. The children made their families an “I love you to pieces” card. We worked on classmates name recognition when we delivered our Valentine’s to their correct mailboxes.

We also discussed some important historical figures. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We talked about how they were Presidents in the past and how they helped our country become as great as it is. We talked about President’s Day and why we celebrate it. The children wrote about what they would do if they became President and we had some really amazing responses.

Even though the month was short and we had vacation right in the middle of it, we still have worked hard in reading, writing, and math.

We are still in Unit 4 of Reading Street. We have read “Bunny Day” and “My Lucky Day”. The skills we have reinforced are sequence of a story, and cause and effect. We have learned the sight words are, that, and do. We will learn one, two, three, four, five, here, go, from. We really want to work on becoming fluent in reading all of our learned sight words so far. If you need a list of the sight words, please contact me. A fun way to practice could be to create sight word cards and play a game of memory with them. Upcoming in the unit we will be discussing consonant blends (two sounds that blend together to make one sound sl in slide), Gg, Ee, Ww, and Jj. We are almost done learning all of our letters and sounds. It would be great if we could practice these at home so we are fluent.

In math we finished up our first book! You may have noticed that the book came home. Do with it as you wish. We will begin 9.1 this week and we will be learning a lot about teen numbers! Students should now be able to recognize numbers 1-10, order them in sequential order, discuss what is greater than or less than, and add and subtract numbers 1-5. Also, students should be able to count by 1’s to at least 60. They should be able to count by 1’s and 10’s to 100 by the end of the year. This can be an easy thing to practice as ‘filler’ time (in the car, bath, at dinner).

Again, thank you for all of your hard work so far this year. Thank you for all of the donations whether it be for a special day or just cleaning products. We really appreciate your generosity!

If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact me!

Thanks,

Ashley
