Changes in Education Nowadays:

Digital Potential versus Cognitive Traps

Key Competencies in the Knowledge Society for e-Inclusion

28-30 October 2009

The second International Conference Changes in Education Nowadays; Digital Potential versus Cognitive Traps is organized by European Centre for Lifelong Learning and Multimedia Education at Pedagogical University of Krakowin cooperation with International Federation for Information Processing. It's a first attempt to apply the Bentos-Gonçalves Declation of actions issued from WCCE'2009 (www.wcce2009.org) along the IFIP AGORA Initiative on Lifelong Learning ( http://www.ifip-tc3.net/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=50 )

The rapid development of information & communication technologies is changing life of a human today in almost all aspects. At present we can communicate, work, do shopping, or make transactions in a completely new way but in order to take a real advantage of this rich and changing technological offer we should also think and learn in new – suitable way. The changes around us take place more and more often and we wish to keep up with them. So, we support ourselves with multimedia, interactive educational platforms or hypertext knowledge bases trying to learn all life, but…

- Are the effects of our activities sufficient?

- Can we support such old teaching methods with such revolutionary tools?

- Doesn’t episodic and hypertext transmission of information oppose the linear building of structures of our knowledge?

- Can we avoid the trap that the technology tempting with virtual reality lays for physiological possibilities of human mind?

- What effects are there between the evolution of information & communication technologies and the possibilities of their integration in educational system?

The aim of the conference is to confront experience, opinions, scientific theories and practical solutions in the field of changes, which are taking place – or should take place - under the influence of technological – economic conditions in modern education. We suggest a constructive discussion, which will lead to working out suggestions for the future.

We assume the activity and commitment of all the participants, the result of which will be a final document prepared together, which will try to answer the questions: What is a crucial priority to modern teaching process? What should be its basic assumptions nowadays?

The memorandum, as the opinion of the representatives of academic circle in European countries will be submitted to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Poland and to European Commission. This document will be also an entry point to the Brisbane IFIP Congress in 2010 for the educational stream (http://www.wcc2010.org/IFIP_conferences.html ).

We assume that the conference will have the form of workshops. We predict 3 discussion groups, which during 3 conference days will try to answer the following questions:

I group – Educational system re-engineering

- Redefinition of educational system in the context of the National Qualifications Framework

-What has a significant influence on the educational system nowadays and what are the consequences of this?

II group – Ways of accommodality of lifelong learning (LLL) to contemporary reality

- Higher education in the system of lifelong learning (LLL)
