Lesson Plans

9th-12th Science

SOL BIO.2 and BIO.4

The student will investigate and understand the chemical and biochemical principles essential for life. Key concepts include

-In this lesson, students learn characteristics of eight phyla of invertebrates and explore the diversity of this large group.

-To describe the features of sponges and cnidarians

-To distinguish between flatworms, roundworms, and segmented worms

-To describe the features of mollusks, echinoderms, and arthropods

Learning Objectives:

- recall or recognize important information, key definitions, terminology, and facts;

-explain the information in one’s own words, comprehend how the information is related to other key facts, and suggest additional interpretations of its meaning or importance;

-apply the facts and principles to new problems or situations, recognizing what information is required for a particular situation, using the information to explain new phenomena, and determining when there are exceptions;

-analyze the underlying details of important facts and principles, recognizing the key relations and patterns that are not always readily visible;

-arrange and combine important facts, principles, and other information to produce a new idea, plan, or product;

-makejudgments about information in terms of its accuracy, precision, consistency, or effectiveness.

Differentiation:

-For writing assignments some students will write 3 sentences other will write 4 or 5

-Some students can explain their thought process orally while others will write it

-Based on the needs of the class, individually, I will remediate and reiterate the material until it is learned

-Students who struggle with writing I will allow shorter answers

Key Vocabulary:invertebrate, cnidarian, radial symmetry, tentacle, flatworm, bilateral symmetry, roundworm, segmented worm, mollusks, arthropod, molting crustacean, arachnid, complete metamorphosis, incomplete metamorphosis, pupa, tube foot.

Monday, 12-12-16

-We will begin Chapter 3, Lesson 3.

-Students will complete the vocabulary words for this lesson. If students finish, we will go over each vocabulary word in class.

Tuesday, 12-13-16

-( Warm up Activity ) I will display pictures of invertebrates that represent a variety of phyla, such as earthworms, jellyfish, snails, crabs, spiders, beetles, mosquitoes, starfish, and pill bugs. The students will observe each animal and describe its body structure, body covering, and habitat if shown. We will discuss characteristics the invertebrates have in common and differences among them.

-We will begin reading Chapter 3, Lesson 3.

Wednesday, 12-14-16

-We will finish reading Chapter 3, Lesson 3.

-Students will begin working on Workbook activity # 9.
