Job Description

Job Purpose

We’re Global Generation, and we’re on the lookout for a Kitchen Intern to help us in an exciting time of growth, in which our garden, café and events space are becoming increasingly popular. You will work alongside Global Generation’s Chefs to cook seasonal and vegetarian meals involving the wider Kings Cross community in the Skip Garden Kitchen. You will get to take part in all aspects of our work - from picking fresh herbs and vegetables from the garden to use in the cooking and learning about them to cooking meals, from simple hearty dishes for the cafe to big buffet spreads and sit down meals for special events. You will also get the chance to go out into Kings Cross to cook and sell food from our mobile cafe, a purpose built christiania cargo bike.

Organisational Context

Global Generation has an established network of urban food-growing sites in King’s Cross, of which the Skip Garden is the ‘mothership’. Our work is focused on the development of the whole person, providing support for young people to become catalysts for change in their communities. We integrate values-based reflective learning into practical sessions, enabling young people to grow themselves, grow relationships and grow a new vision for the future.

The food we grow gets used in our Skip Garden Kitchen - a transformed portable cabin - involving local young people and local businesses. Cooking and eating together is an important aspect of Global Generation, an important income earner in order to reinvest the money into our projects with young people as well as increasingly a platform to bring different people together and learn in a hands on way. The Skip Garden Kitchen is open on Wednesday to Friday. In addition to the cafe, we also take out our bike, from which you can cook and sell food, to bring a piece of the Skip Garden to the wider community.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As the Kitchen Intern you will:

●  Work alongside Global Generation’s chefs, young people and volunteers in the preparation and serving of food for the cafe, staff team and for an exciting variety of events

●  Go out on the bike selling food and as a means to promote the Skip Garden

●  Represent Global Generation with fantastic customer service

●  Take sole responsibility for certain meals after building up your cooking confidence

●  Help with all aspects of running the kitchen - the organising of stock, the cleaning of the kitchen, and ensuring that health, safety and hygiene rules are adhered to

Essential Skills and Experience

This would be an ideal role for someone who wants to get into catering or is simply passionate about food. We would need you to:

●  Be enthusiastic about cooking good quality sustainable, vegetarian food

●  Enjoy working with young people

●  Share the values of Global Generation

●  Be a self starter, enjoy taking initiative

●  Be motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team

●  Be flexible, and have a great working attitude.

Support you will get in the role

●  Work very closely with the Global Generation chefs as well as the rest of Global Generation’s Programmes team (garden and youth programmes) to get a feel of the whole of the work

●  There are potentials to work in partnership with our local restaurant partners, such as Grain Store, Caravan, Rotunda and The Gilbert Scott

Time Commitment: Ideally, you will be happy to work with us three days per week (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) for a minimum of three months and up to six months.

Expenses: We will pay you £10 per day to cover your travel expenses and you’d always share a home-cooked lunch with the rest of the team

Start Date: as soon as possible after interview.
