Kaitlin Benson of Chetek, WI with a 49.25 inch release, Kaitlin is 7 years old.

Her father Bob Benson, a Master in our chapter says:

After dinner in the cabin, I did a quick check to see who wanted to go out and fish the evening with me. Pam (wife) wanted to get the cabin straightened up, and Jacob (age 8) turned me down as he had a friend at a nearby cabin. Kaitlin (age 7) decided that she would go with, but only "if we can cast, because trolling is boring." Bob would cast the lure and have Kaitlin reel it in. Her muskie was 49.25 inches and some where around 35 pounds. Hookset instructions were, "just reel faster".

First WI Chapter A team just missed winning the Annual Gill Hamm Challenge held at Red Wing Lodge on Lake of the Woods August 4-6th. The team jumped into a narrow lead the first day with four fish from Jim Coffin, a 48 incher from Len Rubesch, and a monster 54.5 personal best by Dick Stelter!!! On Thursday, day two, they extended their lead with two more fish by Jim Coffin, a 41.5 by Dan Husby, a 48.5 by Dick Stelter, and an unbelievable day by Len Rubesch. Len boated his first fifty in the morning with a beautiful 53.5 about 9:30. Then after lunch, he returned to the area and caught another fifty incher!! Back to back fiftys. Not a bad day Len!! It seemed like the hot cabin had used up all their luck however, as they did not boat a fish Friday morning. Although Jimmy C. added two more smaller fish to the total, it was not quite enough as Fargo -Morehead squeaked into the lead and won the Ole minnow bucket and its contents by one stinky point. It was a great tournament however, and if you have never fished the Gill Hamm, give it a shot next year. It is a great time.

Fish totals for the week, for the twelve guys who stayed at Mylies totaled 39 fish, including the three 50 plus fish mentioned earlier. Jim Coffin boated eleven fish, a great week, and only one guy got skunked. (We won't mention his name.)

The water in the rearing ponds is flowing well. The water spilling over the dam on Island lake has dropped to a trickle. Weeds have had a burst of growth and prevent you from seeing much activity in the pond. Gary Vetterkind (DNR) has seen muskies about 5-6 inches long . This is about where the fish should be in growth now. We will order minnows to be sure they have adequate feed for their growth spurt this next month. On the surface everything looks good.
