Position Title:People Advisor

Directly Reports to:Director of HR

Functionally responsible to:National Safeguarding Manager

Role Summary

St John Cymru Wales is committed to the principle of ‘One St John’. We aim to provide outstanding people management to support our employees and volunteers equally.

The People Advisorwill fulfil a key role in increasing the awareness of, and promotinggood practice in, Human Resource Management, Health & Safety and Safeguarding in St John.

They will use their HR knowledge and expertise to provide advice on the following areas for staff and volunteers:

  • Employment law
  • Organisational development
  • Resourcing and talent planning
  • Learning and development
  • Performance and reward
  • Employee engagement
  • Employee relations
  • Health & safety

In addition they will assist the National Safeguarding Manager with the management of Safeguarding within St John to protect vulnerable persons and children.

They will also provide support with administration and processes.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Facilitate successful recruitment campaigns by providing advice on, and assistance with, the recruitment process, including advertising jobs, interviewing candidates and drawing up contracts.

Prepare ‘induction packs’ to welcome new employees – and oversee their induction.

Give advice on the training and development of staff in conjunction with the Training Directorate.

Organise and run training courses on employment and safeguarding issues, such as: absence management, disciplinary measures and performance development etc

Help with the Performance Development Review process.

Help plan and organise how the organisation is structured so that the right people with the right skills and experience are in the right roles.

Assist with succession planning.

Respond to general HR, H&S and Safeguarding related queries from managers, employees and volunteers, in person, via the telephone and by email.

Give advice on aspects of employment, safeguarding and health & safety law. To be aware of the latest legislationand codes of practice and to consider the implications for St John.

Assist in development and implementation of, and compliance with, relevant policies, procedures and regulations.

Assist in the practical application of practices and procedures.

Provide guidance to managers on disciplinary and grievance issues, participating in the relevant procedures where appropriate.

Conduct investigations and report on findings.

Assist in the management of absence and sickness control.

Attend employee meetings and participate in negotiations and consultations regarding employment issues and conditions of service.

Assist in conducting surveys of volunteers and staff.

Contribute to the retention of staff including conducting exit interviews.

Complete the necessary procedures when an employee leaves the organisation.

Assist in the application of the health and safety management system.

Carry out routine risk assessments, adverse incident investigation and other H&S procedures.

Assist in compliance with health & safety standards.

Represent St John Cymru Wales, from time to time as requested, on relevant Committees/ Working Parties.

Produce reports and undertake statistical analysis.

To carry out required administration including maintaining HR database and employee files.

Provide administrative support to the Independent Pay Review panel and participate in pay surveys and reviews.

Maintain records, such as sickness and holidays, adverse incidents, and monitor performance.

Take part in ‘road shows’ in the volunteer counties.

Other related duties as required.
