LESSON: A VERY HUNGRY CATEPILLER

October 8, 2009 was the 40th anniversary of the publishing of A Very Hungry Catepillar by Eric Carle

MOTIVATIONAL MATERIALS:

Week 1

-“blue atmosphere” by Frankenthauler”

Week 2

-A Very Hungry Caterpillar- by Eric Carle

-song I’m a very hungry catepillar

TEACHER PREPARATIONS:

Week 1

-tape 9x12” piece of paper to tray for each student using masking tape

Week 2

-cut abstract paintings in half, using ½ to cut 8 ovals for caterpillars using 2” O and dye cut letter machine

-Make patterns for butterflies

-cut black construction paper 9x6”

PROCEEDURES:

Week 1

-show abstract painting and explain the term

-discus the what the students think the artist was trying to paint

-what do the students like and dislike about the painting

-demonstrate how to get the colors to bleed

-students are encouraged to use all colors, but no black

-pass out water and watercolors

-students are to fill entire picture with color

-pull one corner of the tape so students can add name to white frame

-place on shelves to dry

-teacher will remove the tape after the paint has dried

Week 2

-read book and explain 40th birthday of the book

-pass out black paper and butterfly pattern. Student are to trace their butterfly on folded black paper, cut and glue on white paper.

-explain how the students are to decorate their butterfly using ½ of their abstract painting from last week. By folding their paper, they can cut identical shapes, one for each wing of their butterfly

-teacher is to cut ovals from the other half of their watercolor painting.

-students are to glue ovals together to make their caterpillar.

-using sharpies, add face and details to caterpillar.

-a background is added to the white paper using their crayons

MATERIALS NEEDED:

STUDENTS ART ROOM

Week 1 Pencil 9x12” white paper

Watercolors

Paint shirts

Week 2 Pencil 9x12” white paper

Crayons black paper

Scissors abstract watercolor paintings

Glue black sharpies

Dye cut machine- 2” O

EVALUATION STANDARDS:

Week 1

-student fills entire paper with many colors

-student allows colors to mix together, rather then stirring the colors together

-student follows direction in not using black

Week 2

-cutting techniques

-gluing techniques

-addition of details using sharpie

-addition of colored background

-addition of extra details
