Where To Get Help (Coldline Fact Sheet 6)

Here are some useful local names and addresses for anyone needing help and advice, along with information on health, leisure activities and campaigning.

Independent Advice Agencies

Age Concern Hackney Coldline

Coldline provides free, confidential and independent advice to those in the community ‘at risk’ from the cold. This project assists older people aged 60 plus living in Hackney.

Age Concern Hackney Information Service

Based at the same address as Coldline, this service has information on a wide range of topics including leisure, transport, well-being and housing.
Freephone Service: 0800 917 9830 - 9.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
Drop-in times: Monday & Wednesday 10am to 1pm, Tuesday 2pm to 4pm.

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)

Hackney’s Citizens Advice Bureau is based on two sites in the borough. Anyone wanting to use the service is asked to go to the office nearest to where they live. The CAB provides free, confidential, impartial and independent advice on a range of topics including welfare benefits, housing and legal matters. Getting work done in the home

Mobile Repair Service

Provides a low-cost repair service for older and disabled people in both public and private housing. Work undertaken includes repairs to appliances, heating, electrics, carpentry, plumbing and security. Also provides accident and falls prevention services including free home safety checks with remedial work.

Anchor Staying Put

Helps older owner occupiers and private tenants to arrange repairs, adaptations and improvements to their homes. Will provide help with getting grants, finding builders and supervising the work. Also has a Small Repairs Service and a new Gardening Service.

Staying healthy

The Sharp End

Provides a healthy living and resource centre for people aged 50 and above living in Hackney. Offers a variety of activities aimed at benefiting physical and mental well-being. This includes creative writing classes, yoga and salsa. Classes are suitable for people of different levels of fitness and mobility.

Hoxton Health Group

Based at St Leonard’s, this group offers acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal medicine, homeopathy, shiatsu massage and osteopathy to the over 60s as well as gentle exercise and healthy living classes. Treatments are free, but you have to be a member of Hoxton Health Group at a cost of £8.00 per calendar month.

This is a new service which provides access and training to older people in Hackney who wish to use computers. It is aimed at both beginners and experienced users.

Council for Older People

The Council for Older People (CfOP) is a borough-wide forum open to all older people in Hackney. It’s membership is made up of both individuals and representatives from a diverse range of older people’s groups. From these groups, it elects a committee every two years. The Committee meets monthly and holds discussions on a variety of topics of concern including housing benefit, disability transport, health and social care provision. It also organises quarterly open meetings where older people can find out information and have their say on important local and national issues. The Council for Older People provides a base for consultation and seeks to ensure that older people are represented in the local and London-wide planning of services.

Volunteering at Age Concern Hackney

Volunteers play an important role at Age Concern Hackney. They help the organisation to make a real difference to the lives of older people through the knowledge, experience and commitment they bring. Are you a sociable and patient person? Are you interested in working with people? If so, you may like to join our Befriending Scheme, help older people learn to use computers, assist on the Information Service or help out at events. Age Concern Hackney offers help with expenses, appropriate training and support.
