Primary Function:

Under the general direction of the Regional Director, provides consultative services on the selection and use of adaptive technology for educating early childhood children and school-age students who are blind or visually impaired. Serves as liaison among Local Education Agencies (LEAs), Area Education Agencies (AEAs) and the Statewide System for Vision Services/Iowa Braille School (IBS) for assistive technology specific to blind or visually impaired.

Reports to: Regional Director

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provides direct consultation, technical assistance, demonstrations and material resources to educational teams for early childhood and school-age students who are blind or visually impaired in the area of assistive technology.
  2. Provides guidance to evaluation team members in the area of technology that may be used in a plan for student services.
  3. In cooperation with low vision clinic personnel, demonstrates equipment at Low Vision Clinics and provides follow-up services, as appropriate, to teams serving children and students with low vision.
  4. Coordinates services provided through the Assistive Device Center including selection, demonstration, and distribution.
  5. Directs the work of the Instructional Support Technician.
  6. Serves in a leadership capacity in planning for and delivering professional development and parent learning opportunities related to assistive technology for children and students who are blind or visually impaired, including but not limited to the Fall and Spring Vision Conferences and Summer Institutes.
  7. Collaborates with other consultants to provide training for parents regarding technology for the education of children and youth who are blind or visually impaired.
  8. Remains current on new developments in assistive technology.
  9. Supports and adheres to the Statewide System for Vision Services’, mission, programs, policies and procedures.
  10. Supports the Statewide System’s strategic plan and adheres to system policies and procedures.
  11. Complies with personnel policies.
  12. Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  13. Demonstrates willingness to support change for the improvement of services to students.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by the Regional Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in education plus at least four years of experience in teaching early childhood or school-age students with disabilities required. Experience with assistive technology and the integration of technology with the curriculum; and demonstrated ability to provide effective technology services including the selection, training, demonstration, and coaching of assistive technology also required. Candidates must have or be eligible to obtain valid Iowa Teaching License by time of appointment. Master’s degree preferred. Visual Impairment and/or Special Education Consultant endorsement plus experience teaching students who are blind or visually impaired also preferred.
