Re : Ideas from Andrea

This morning I spoke at length with Andrea as she was riding the bus into New York. Tomorrow when I am in the City, I will drop by near her office to pick up her complete notes on all she’s viewed and what further B Roll and music ideas she suggests.

Below is a synopsis of some of her excellent ideas so far that we can discuss and activate in our meeting next week. For instance:

Use of stills: She is not in favor of it. Go for moving B Roll.

Time of day for shoots: “The golden hours” of dawn or dusk. Avoid the “ugly” midday.

Intro segment (Tom’s account of the first day):

·  Tunnel scene in Kingston at dawn or dusk

“Absolute worst day” (Barbara C.):

·  An over-the-shoulder shot showing the child being manhandled to a gurney

Segment about the son “taking off in the middle of the night” (Julie M.):

·  A nighttime scene of loved one bolting out the backdoor, then cut to a spooky scene in downtown Trenton (Stockton St. area?)

Segment about mother “taking a knife to the TV” (Pat D.):

·  Film of a woman’s hand and arm, dressed in a 50’s type housecoat, amid period furniture, taking to a TV and its cords with a knife

Segment about mother “ending up in a mental hospital” (Pat D.):

·  “Locked down” wide shot of TPH from across the street. “Locked down” means a rigid hand-held shoulder (not tripod) shot, moving ever so slowly, without zooming

·  But, also can experiment with other techniques, so to “give the editor lots of options” for cutting.

Segment about cutting (Will L.):

·  Over-the-shoulder shot of a kid in a karate suit with knife in hand, without panning the face, etc.

“Sinbad the Sailor” segment (Turba C.):

·  Office scene of an imperious nurse or social worker and the defiant loved one “in a stand-off”

·  An “establishment shot” of the loved one holding a pen, then signing “Sinbad”

Segment about the “ultimately the marriage broke up” (Barbara C.):

·  Over-the-shoulder wide shot of a lonely, divorced mother flipping at a dining room table through a photo album of the family in earlier times.

Segment about son’s illness causing “estrangement” with sister (Tom P.):

·  Shot of a family TV room in action, of legs of TV viewers, perhaps with an evident empty space, then panning to nearby photos of the pair once together in happier times, etc.

Segment about loved ones who think they don’t need help:

·  Shot of a mother knocking of the closed door of the unresponsive loved one.

Title cards:

·  Use artwork as background for the title cards.

·  Ultimately render the graphics in Premier for better effects
