Horry County K-12 Foundation D/B/A as Business Education Expectations Millennium Scholars…

The BE2 Millennium Scholars program, established in 2005, is a scholarship program that exemplifies building capacity with deserving, qualified Early College High School Students. The Early College High School, established in 05’ in concurrence with the Foundation has met and surpassed the expectations of Horry County K-12 Foundation, BE2. Below you will find the outlining of our goals as well as the criteria for scholarship award with the Early College High School BE 2 Millennium Scholars program.

The goal of the BE2MS is to promote academic excellence and provide higher education experiences for outstanding middle quartile students with significant financial need. The scholars program will reward highest potential and directed career drive by:

·  Reducing financial barriers for students who successfully complete Horry County Early College High School and receive an AA/AS degree from HGTC whom are filled with academic and leadership promise

·  Increasing the representation of low socio economic, minority (color, gender, ethnicity) as well as first generation college students in schools of higher education especially targeting engineering,, science, mathematics, education library science, hospitality, certified public accounting as well as other areas in which these populations are severely underrepresented.

·  Developing a diversified cadre of future leaders for Horry County, South Carolina and America, encouraging successful completion of a minimum of a bachelors degree

·  Providing seamless support for ECHS students from first year of high school through a completed bachelors degree, inclusive of course of the recommendation that a 2 year terminal degree in area or an AA or AS from Horry Georgetown Technical College be obtained before being allowed to apply for the 4 year scholarship

Guidelines for Early College High School Scholarship Applicants:

  1. Early College High School Scholarship Applicants must have completed the following requirements before completing an application ( applications may be obtained from your counselor):

·  Student must have obtained a high school diploma from ECHS obtaining a 2.5 or higher GPA for the high school completion ( transcripts should be attached)

·  Student must have completed an AA/AS or terminal technical degree and possess an awarded diploma from HGTC with a GPA of 3.0 or higher (transcripts should be attached) If student presents proof of being able to complete this degree within a 12 month period and possess a 3.0 GPA they may apply to have a tuition free, 12 month grace period to finish their degree before entering their four year institution. If this AA/AS or technical transfer degree is completed within the 12 month period after graduation the ECHS is still eligible for all scholarship services provided by BE2.

·  Student must have assembled a career life work planning team; the team should consist of one parent, one educator from ECHS, their mentor (if they are engaged with one), a community leader in career choice area and a representative from the four year institution of choice). The student should work interactively with this team throughout their Jr. and Sr. high school year There should be letters of recommendation provided by two or more people involved on this team that have indepth knowledge of this student.

·  Student must have completed a Career Life Work Planning portfolio, the portfolio should be inclusive of the following:

a.  Career life work planning assessments/ personality and interest inventories

b.  Personal Mission Statement

c.  Six Year Life Plan

d.  Declaration of chosen major and four year institution designation

e.  College applications included, proof of full acceptance into major of choice must be supplied before tuition check is rendered, tuition will be paid directly to the four year institution of choice

·  Student must have completed a Financial Aid Planning portfolio, the portfolio should be inclusive of the following:

a.  Proof of application of Pell Grant, award amount if available

b.  Proof of application of no less than 3 scholarships in area of career focus or for institution they have chosen, award amounts if available

c.  Proof of application for any SC Educational Lottery Funds, i.e. LIFE Scholarship, award amount if available

·  Student must have completed and provide proof of no less than 20 hours of community service in Horry County. These hours may be served in an area chosen by the student and may be served at the student’s leisure. The student must have these hours documented by a non-profit supervisor within their organization of service

  1. All of the above must be prepared and presented in one completed portfolio style package no later than March 30 of the year of four year institution enrollment.
  2. The student, after submission of the portfolio information, will be notified of an interview time with the scholarship committee, at this time the student will need to be prepared to elaborate on career choice and choice of institution as well as to elaborate on life plans and community leadership involvement. The student will present an overview of their accomplishments, their career plan and be prepared to answer questions that the board will pose.
  3. All scholarship awards will be made no later than April 1 of enrollment year.

Academic reporting and maintenance of the BE2 Millennium Scholarship:

·  Each four institution will report student’s grades to the BE2 Millennium Scholarship Committee; grades will be reported at mid term in the first semester and at end of semester thereafter. The mid term reporting will be to affirm that the student is still in enrollment and that there are no academic problems that need to be addressed in a partnership format.

·  At the end of the first semester it is desirable that the student have a 3.0 GPA; however the student will have one semester to bring up a lesser GPA but must present a 3.0 GPA in order to continue the scholarship award from BE2

·  At the completion of the Jr. year at the four year institution of enrollment the student should reapply for the next year of scholarship award, this application will be a one sheet re-application form, the student should submit the form to the BE2 scholarship committee chair and schedule an interview with at least one of the members of the scholarship committee to report progress and advise BE2 of academic honors, milestones accomplished and success patterns in general

·  The scholarship award opportunity terminates after a two year period of time or granting of the four year degree, whichever occurs first.

Horry County K-12 Foundation d/b/a as BE2 will have assembled a scholarship review team to which qualified students will present all of the above requirements to, this work should be presented before March 30 so that the student will have the opportunity to be accepted at the four year of choice or will be well integrated into their program of choice at the technical college. Students will be advised of scholarship award and BE2 will make arrangements for payment to the four year of choice. If the student is completing their technical degree, the student must file a technical college continuation form with BE2 and then apply by April 1 with all above requirements in the extra year of their technical college completion.
