Make-up Policy
Assignments may only be made up and graded following an excused absence (excused by a note to the attendance office). Students will have the number of days of their excused absence in which to submit missed work. If a student has an unexcused absence or exceeds the number of days given to submit work (following an excused absence), a grade of zero will be given to the missing assignment.
For tests, quizzes, or assignments scheduled previously to and falling on or due the date of an absence, students will be expected to take the assessment or submit the assignment the day they return.
Late homework: Due to the time sensitivity of homework, late homework will generally not be accepted and will receive a grade no higher than 50%.
Vocabulary
Units follow a four-class rotation.
Day 1: Students read contextual sentences and define new vocabulary.
Day 2: Students complete fill-in the blank activities using the new vocabulary.
Day 3: Assessments.
"Skinny Mondays": Review and additional practice
Writing
Students work on grade-level prescribed (SOL) skill areas.
The class uses grammar practice not only to work on writing mechanics but also to develop reading fluency with high frequency words and various sentence structures.
Each student will create a writing portfolio with at least four formal essays by the end of the year. Plagiarism is a form of cheating and will receive a zero. All formal essays and a research paper will be submitted through the turnitinprogram. All work submitted must be original to the student or appropriately cited.
Reading/Literature
Essential Question:What does literature tell me about myself?
The class will read a variety of genres including short stories, poetry, and non-fiction.
English 9 students also read from the following core texts:
the novel, Somewhere in the Darkness; epic poetry, The Odyssey; Shakespearean drama, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet; and a memoir from the Nazi concentration camps, Night.
