Project Information

Project Title (50)Hearth Nutrition Program

Project summary (200)

Improving the nutritional status of children by improving the feeding, caring, hygiene and health seeking practices of caregivers using Hearth and the Positive Deviance approach.

Project need and beneficiaries (500)

As per UNICEF 2001 data, 28% of Filipino children under the age of 5 are moderately or severely underweight. The overarching cause of malnutrition is lack of knowledge in using locally available affordable foods, as well as poor feeding, caring, hygiene, and health seeking practices of caregivers. Existing interventions are heavily focused on supplemental feeding, which are unsustainable.

About 1000 children aged 6 to 24 months and their caregivers in five poorestrural communities will benefit from this project.

Project activities (250)

All children under 2 are weighed, and well nourished and poor children are called "Positive Deviants" (PD). Based on foods eaten by PD children, high protein and calorie recipes from local sources are given to malnourished (hearth) children during 12 daysessions. Hearth children caregivers contribute ingredients, fuel, water and cooking pots to prove that they can rehabilitate their children using existing resources. Education on feeding, caring hygiene and health seeking practices follow each session.

Project expected outcomes (250)

About 1000 children will attend at least one 12 - day session (some may attend two or three sessions) and about 65% will achieve “catch-up” growth of 200 grams in one 12 day session, which is faster than the “International Standard Median”.About 500 caregivers will gain skills in feeding, caring, hygiene and health seeking practices which they can continuously share with other caregivers.

“Before, as long as I feed my child, I felt good. However, my child is not gaining weight and is sickly because the food I am giving is not nutritious. Hearth sessions taught me how to prepare nutritious foods using available foods in my community. I also learned that proper hygiene is important in maintaining the health of my child and the whole family”.

Organization’s mission (500)

PSBP envisions a world where children live with hope.

It also hopes to improve the quality of life and expand opportunities for children, who, as a result of circumstances of their birth, have been denied access to educational, social, economic and civil rights.

We define quality as the right and opportunity to acquire identity and self-worth, health care, education and livelihood.

We carry out our mission by building the capacity of families, or local agencies, to provide services directly, and by promoting worldwide understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
