Dear Student,

Congratulations on your decision to take Advanced Chemistry at MMSTC during the 2008-2009 school year. By furthering your study of chemistry, you are giving yourself the advantage of having been exposed to considerable chemistry during your high school years. This will benefit you greatly when you continue your studies at university.

Please take this time during this summer to contact your research partner and discuss potential research ideas. All projects need approval from me, so if you would like, email me () your ideas over the summer and we can discuss potential options.

Additionally, you may opt to take the AP Chemistry Exam in May 2009 and possibly earn college credit in chemistry. If you are planning on taking this exam, you should acquire and use The Princeton Review: Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam as soon as possible. This will help you become familiar with the format of the test as well as give you a breakdown of important topics. I will also take an order in the fall for books.

Summer Work:

Because you have had two years away from chemistry, it will be necessary for you to do some reviewing of the material that was studied in 10th grade chemistry. You will be given a copy of the AP chemistry textbook to take home over the summer and review in addition to sample problems, and a naming packet to complete. As you review, make sure that you take time to study and understand the sample problems. Make sure that you attempt to do all of the circled sample problems and have a complete understanding of the naming packet. These topics will not be “taught” again next year because we will have a great deal of new material to learn in preparation for the AP test.

Each student is responsible for completing the summer worksheets and nomenclature packet which will count as your first two grades in this course during the 2008-20089 school year.

Additional copies of the naming packet can be found on my web page. .

Have a great summer and I will see you in the fall for another great year of chemistry fun!
