ESSAY EXAMINATION: Answer all of the following four questions, typed double spaced (100 points each. DO NOT USE ANY QUOTES! This exam must be handed to me in my office (C347) as well as submitted on turnitin.com between 8:00 and 10:00 on Tuesday, JUNE 15.
1. After reading “Why Trump’s Climate-Wrecking Agenda Could Backfire,” by Mark Hertsgaard (The Nation Magazine, 4/17/17), “Climate Disobedience in the Time of Trump,” by Wen Stephenson (The Nation Magazine, 2/13/17), “True Climate Justice Put Communities of Color First,” by Audrea Lim (The Nation Magazine, 5/22/17), watching “Climate of Doubt” and reading the philosophies of various environmental philosophers, identify yourself as a liberal, a socialist or another identifiable group. Parallel your thinking to one specific philosopher, discussing one key component of the above film and readings. If you are a skeptic, state your argument against this material, convincing a neutral party and if you are an environmentalist add to the above materials convincing a neutral party. 2. Pay Equity Day, 4/11/17 reflected that in the U.S. pay equity between men and women, especially considering race, is a long way down the road. Using one recent statistic (2017) come up with a plan to implement a more just working system between men and women. Use one specific feminist philosopher as support for your plan. You must think about changing ideas regarding “ownership”, “property”, and “control” in such a way that moves “democracy” closer to actualizing the ideas of equality. USE ONE SPECIFIC THINKER AND INCLUDE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. LIMIT YOURSELF TO TWO PAGES.
3. Terrorism today controls our thinking about many aspects of American Society. We want to be safe. We want our liberty protected. Find one specific outside source that reflects your ideas on the role of government in the U.S. Using one philosopher as support, discuss your ideas about this role. Can we have a government that protecting liberty while at the same time it protects our security? USE ONE SPECIFIC THINKER AND INCLUDE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. LIMIT YOURSELF TO TWO PAGES.
4. After watching Frontline’s Steve Bannon’s War,” think about your own picture of our future. Create your own theory of democracy and defend it using the current political climate. Find one outside source that discusses one issue you think is primary to our future. Pick one philosopher and discuss how their ideas reflect your theory. USE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. LIMIT YOURSELF TO TWO PAGES.
