The Valley, Anguilla - The National Disaster Management Committee through the Mitigation Working Group of its Strategic Planning Sub Committee has completed Phase two (2) and three (3) of its 2017 Health and Safety Project. During the Month of April, the Working Group was engaged in the first phase in the procurement of Safety Equipment for Day Care providers, Pre Schools and play schools across the island. The project was developed from Vulnerability Capacity Assessments (VCAs) done in 2015/ 2016 by the Department of Disaster Management Anguilla Fire Rescue Services.
The main component of phase was training and some 22 persons drawn from these facilities received basic life-saving skills and techniques over a three day period facilitated by the Anguilla Red Cross, which covered several areas to include Adult, Child and Infant Choking, CPR and unconscious recover position and a one day Fire Safety Prevention Training facilitated by the Anguilla Fire & Rescue Service. Topics covered in the Fire Safety Training were; Classes of Fire, Uses and types of Fire Extinguishers and care and maintenance of smoke detectors and alarms.
The final phase of the Safety Project resulted in all the Day Care Centers equipped with the installation of Fire Extinguishers, First Aid Kits and Smoke detector alarms systems. The equipment was installed by teams from the Anguilla Fire & Rescue Services under direct supervision of Fire Prevention Officer, Mr. Omari Bourne. The installation team comprised Messers, Orville Richardson, Kerim Reid, Marlon Bryson, Dominique Mussington, Kaliski Adams.
The equipment was donated by First Caribbean Bank, ABC Supplies, DLG, MASA, Delta Petroleum, Cap Juluca Hotel and Sunset Homes
According to secretary of the Mitigation Working group Mr. Alwyn J. Richardson, “we are totally satisfied with the outcome of the project. We met the intended goals and objectives and we are grateful for the assistance of the donors and contributors to the equipment, to the Anguilla Red Cross training facilitators, Messers Israel Benjamin and Trevor Queeley for conducting the training FREE of cost. The next step for the Working Group is to embark on similar initiative for another vulnerable sector among us in the persons of the elderly or senior citizens. Many times these populations are disregarded and it is imperative that we keep our seniors and children safe, and safeguard their welfare from potential emergencies and disasters.
