Term Project of Geographical Information Systems Course

This project consists of two main stages. Each project groups will digitize different cities of Turkey from raster data in the first stage. Raster data can be obtained from the web page of the course. In the second stage, a geographic information system should be established. Shape files of different continents will be used as base data in this stage. Each project group should prepare report for both of these stages. Sample project report that can be obtained from the printing office of faculty should be used while preparing reports.

Aim of the Project

In this work it is purposed that each project group could form a GIS basically. Also it’s aimed learning how to be planned a GIS project, with its processes that started with gathering data, preparing the relations in database, analyzing data and finally visualization of these works.

Students will learn the problems, which occur because of standardization problems in GIS, by establishing different information systems and presenting the data with maps.

At the end of these projects students will have ability on thinking graphically, mapping out information, building analytical solutions around maps and graphics.

Existing Hardware and Software

The hardware and software existing in the computer laboratory of the ITU Civil Engineering Faculty will be used during the project. The following software is available in the laboratory.

  • AutoCAD,
  • MapInfo,
  • Intergraph GeoMedia,
  • Bentley MicroStation & GeoGraphix,
  • ArcView,
  • ArcGIS,
  • Eghas,
  • NetCAD,
  • Microsoft Access

1. Stage

Raster maps which can be obtained from the web page of the GIS course will be digitized by the project groups. Any CAD or GIS software can be used in this process.
After digitizing of the provinces of Turkey, obtained vector data should be geocoded and visualize by means of a GIS software. Each group should submit the vector data in dxf format with following file name (group number.dxf). Submissions will be done by e-mail to the e-mail address of the asisstant of the lecture( or ) The stage report should be submitted to the same e-mail address. (Deadline: 10 th Week)

2. Stage

In this stage each group will collect related attributes from different sources (atlas, maps, internet, library, etc.) and database will be formed. At the end using selected GIS software different analyses will be carried out and results will be presented.Prepared files and results will also be mailed to the same address in the 1. stage. (Deadline: 14 th Week)

3. Stage

Presentation of the project will be done at the end of the semester. (Deadline: 15 th and 16th week)
