Course Description: In Math 2, students will explore the following the topics and build an understanding of the interconnectedness of mathematics.

·  Unit 1: Transformations

·  Unit 2: Quadratic Equations and Functions

·  Unit 3: Radical and Rational Functions

·  Unit 4: Similarity and Congruence

·  Unit 5: Solving Right Triangles

·  Unit 6: Probability

Required Materials: Students are to bring all class materials with them daily. Students are required to bring a writing utensil with them, preferably a pencil, as well as their classwork/homework folder which will be provided at the beginning of the course. Students can bring their own device (Laptop) from home provided that it is checked in with the school. I will have a class set of chromebooks in the event we do an activity online.

Calculators: Many of our activities and work will require the use of a graphing calculator. Mr. Moore has a set of graphing calculators, but will NOT allow students to take them home with them. It is not required to purchase a calculator for this course; however, it is highly encouraged as the TI-84 will be used in every mathematics course throughout high school as well as college.

Grading Policy

Students’ grades will be calculated by the table below. These tests will make up 40% of the student’s grade for this course. 30% of the grade will come from quizzes. These will be given out during class and students will know when these quizzes are. There will be NO unannounced quizzes in this course. 15% of the grade will come from classwork. This will consist of example problems that we do in class as well as in-class activities, warm-ups, and exit tickets. The last 15% of the grade will come from homework. I will not give homework simply to give homework. Homework will be given as extra practice to help students with core concepts of the course.

Grading Policy Grade / Grading Scale / Final Semester
Homework - 15%
Classwork - 15%
Quizzes - 30%
Tests - 40% / A.  100 - 90
B.  89 - 80
C.  79 - 70
D.  69 - 60
F. 59 - below / Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 will each count as 40% of the student’s semester grade. The Math 1 EOC will count as 20% of the semester grade.

Retake Policy

Students have the option to retake tests to improve their grade by completing the following guidelines:

1.  Students must make corrections on the original assessment.

2.  Students must hand in all graded assignments (homework and/or classwork) from the unit in order to be eligible for a retake assessment. *Check for missing assignments in PowerSchool.

3.  Both the corrections to the original assessment and any missing assignments should be turned into Mr. Moore. Once you have completed these steps, you may see Mr. Moore after school for a retake assessment.

NOTE: The retake allows students to gain back half of the points that the missed on the test. So if a student originally had a grade of a 60 and they earned all of the points back on the retake, then they will receive a grade of an 80 for the assignment.

Attendance and Tardiness Policy

Attendance is important for success in the classroom, and students are expected to attend every class each day. If you miss class for any reason, it is your responsibility to get the work and make it up. Arrangements should be made in advance if a student is aware of an upcoming absence. Per LCS policy, if you have 8 absences per class per semester, you will receive no credit for the course. Tardiness will not be tolerated as it disrupts the learning environment of the classroom by being disruptive. Remember, 3 tardies is an automatic office referral (3 lunch periods in ISS, or 90 minutes of detention), 6 tardies is one full day of ISS, and 9 tardies can result in OSS.

Late Assignment Acceptance Policy

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up the work that you missed in class. There will be a designated place in the classroom where you can find extra copies of class materials from each day. You will have one week from the date of your absence to make up any assignments. Once the 5 days have passed, you will receive no credit for any missing classwork or homework.

Classroom Rules and Expectations

Anything that you do that prevents Mr. Moore from teaching or inhibits another student’s learning, will not be tolerated. I wholeheartedly expect all students to respectful myself and one another. Every student is different and each one of you comes in with a different set of skills and expectations for the classroom. I will do my best to meet the needs of every student in the classroom. Below is a list of general rules/guidelines that will promote a good and functioning class environment for all of us to work in.

1.  Be Prepared

a.  Have all of your things together and ready to go at the beginning of class. This includes having homework ready, pencils sharpened, and notebooks out.

b.  NO FOOD or DRINKS will be allowed in the classroom. Bottled water is fine.

Be on Time

a.  See the above tardiness and absence policy

b.  I expect all students to be on time for my class. This is to teach punctuality and responsibility, which will be used in additional courses and later in life.

Be Respectful

a.  We are all in this class together. We are going to work together as a team to learn the material in this course. We all come from different backgrounds and I expect all of us to be tolerant and respectful of different beliefs and opinions.

Be Curious

a.  ASK QUESTIONS. You are encouraged to ask questions in class if you do not understand something.

Be Awesome

a.  All of you are awesome in your own way. Show me what you can do in and outside of the classroom.

Cell Phone Policy

Per Lee County High School’s student handbook, students’ cell phones are not permitted anywhere in the building. If Mr. Moore sees or hears a cell phone in the classroom, then the student will be given directions to put it away and keep it put away for the remainder of class. If Mr. Moore sees the cell phone again, then the student needs to give the cell phone to Mr. Moore and he will put it in a secure location until the end of class. All cell phones will be returned at the end of class.
