NOT YOUR AVERAGE SUMMER!
Nearly all of Canada experienced above our summer normal average temperatures. It’s probably no surprise that in July the average temperature was 32 degrees… which was tough on the grass and flowers but it got all of us spending more time in our pools. It was also great for our chlorine sales J
SMART PUMPS
The hot weather was tough on the Hydro bill - but I gather that Government is going to help us all (using our own money) with a rebate. I hear clients say they turn off the filter pump for part of the day to save energy. That does work, but leaves the pool unfiltered and under-chlorinated the whole time. That’s a perfect condition for algae to get blooming in your pool. The newest “Smart Pumps” are programmable to run all the time but switch to lower, (cheaper) speeds during “peak” rates. The electricity savings will provide a payback in about 2 years. This is one item that should be on your “must have” list. We have them on special at $995 until stock runs out.
RIO OLYMPICS
Maybe like a lot of people I was not really into the games; except to wonder if they were actully going to happen. Then they started and it was so great to see our athletes show their stuff on the podium! Congrats Canadian Olympians - you won 4 GOLD, 3 SILVER AND 15 BRONZE in Rio. You did a great job and made all Canadians proud– way to go.

Now this is a Toronto team worth watching – I think the entire country should get behind these guys as they claw their way into a playoff position.
LEAKING!
This is the time of year when we get calls from pool owners who are not sure if their pool is leaking. They wonder if the 1”-2” a week water loss - all summer long - was only normal evaporation or splash out. Now is the time to look into any suspicious water loss before the cold weather arrives. If you have concerns about a possible leak we can help run you through the famous “bucket test”. If a leak is confirmed we will come to your pool with sophisticated, high-tech equipment to locate leaks in buried pipes, vinyl liners or concrete pool structures and then get the problem repaired properly.
It’s very important to make sure your pool is not leaking now as it will continue losing water all winter long. Such water loss can continue after the ice forms, which may result in major damage to liners, pool walls and steps.
POOL CLOSING
Unfortunately it is that time of year that we need to begin thinking about winterizing our pools. If you can believe it we have already started to close some customer’s pools and we are receiving lots of calls inquiring about the details and costs for Pool Closing services.
The main purpose in winterizing your in-ground swimming pool is to protect it from damage due to freezing water. Another is to keep it as clean as possible for the next season. Closing your pool properly can make it much easier to get it started up, cleaned and balanced for the summer.
We have done some comparison-shopping ourselves and find that it’s pretty difficult to figure out what the various companies are charging for different winterizing services. I’m not sure that being confusing is the right approach for the average consumer.
If you are shopping around for prices for closing your pool this season make sure to create a list of questions to ask when you are trying to compare “apples to apples”. We are seeing some amazingly low prices out there and that is likely due to the economy being tougher than we’ve seen for some time. Some of the pricing sounds too good to be true….but maybe that’s exactly what it is.
There’s a place for every price range in our market and “a little hard work never killed anybody”. On the other hand, most of us lead very busy lives and would prefer to have everything done – including:
•Lower pool water
•Drain pump, filter and heater
•Blow out and plug skimmer and return pipes
•Remove deck equipment (ladders, diving boards etc.)
•Remove pool light from niche
•Add 4L non-toxic anti-freeze in skimmer
•Install Gizzmo or other skimmer protection device
•Add shock, scale inhibitor and algaecide
•Install your cover

EcoFinish
We have an exciting new product to refinish your plaster or painted pools. This is a plastic, high-performance coating that is applied at high temperature to achieve a solid bond to the concrete surface. There are many colours to choose from and they all carry the EcoFinish 10 year warranty. See the photos that are copied in the next column. It is truly an amazing transformation of your pool.
For those with vinyl pools that have those white, walk-in steps we can EcoFinish them to in a different colour that will go with your new liner. The cost is about half the price of changing the steps. Call us for details on how we can make your pool look new and improved.

It’s hard to believe that we left Bank & Alta Vista 8 years ago – and some days I miss it. However, our new location at 5905 Prince of Wales Drive is a great place in the “country” yet only 2 minutes off Hwy 416. We are not that far from the “City” – which is apparent by the number of our Ottawa clients who make the trip to “Carsonby”. We have the best customers and it’s wonderful to see you come here to support us. In fact, our re-vamped store had its busiest season to date. Thanks to all and have a great winter season.
