Kid’s Galapagos Scavenger Hunts

June 23-July 2, 2017 July 21-30, 2017 Aug. 18-27, 2017

Day One: International flights arranged by guests arrives Guayaquil, Ecuador. Transfer service receives guests outside customs and takes them to Hotel Wyndham.

Day Two: Transfer service takes guests to airport for their AM flight to San Cristobal, Galapagos. Remember that you will need $100 in cash for each person when entering the Galapagos, and that you will have needed to purchase a Galapagos entry card, $20 each before you go to the airline check in counter. We will send you more information on this once your flights are confirmed. I’ll meet you at the airport here on San Cristobal with your guide. We’ll get you checked in, oriented a little, well go have some lunch and then you’re off to fish with locals.

These are photos of my son at age two. He’s reaching for a marine iguana in the one photo which is technically a no-no.

Galapagos Notes:

On San Cristobal they will be staying at Casa de Nelly, one of the first B&Bs here though the accommodations are more apartment like. First row of photos below. Nelly will be making you breakfast. The property is located within easy walking distance of a several snorkel sites, the interpretation center and all of the restaurants in town. On Isabela you will be staying at Casa de Marita and on Santa Cruz at Hotel Deja Vu. Double occupancy in all hotels.

We have not included any food costs excepting welcome lunch on San Cristobal, dinner with fisherman that night, breakfasts at all hotels in Galapagos, lunch at farm on San Cristobal, lunch at farm by the volcano and box lunches while on all day boat trips. This is to allow you some flexibility and some time to enjoy the various pueblos on your own.

We will provide snorkel equipment or any parts of it you don’t have, but I would highly recommend you bring at least your own masks and snorkels and practice with them a time or two in a pool before you get here. These you need to be comfortable with. You do not want to spend any of your precious time here figuring out how to make your mask fit properly, because while you are doing that some of the things you have come here to see will be swimming right below you. If you want to purchase your snorkel equipment new and leave it here with us we will reimburse you for the cost.

Pack light, laundry can be done.

Should anyone wish to, Salsa dancing is available some late nights at the local’s club where you’ll be the only gringos in the place and the locals will likely be buying drinks and showing you some steps.

It is entirely possible to snorkel every dawn and sunset when you are not “on tour” with the sea life.

Day Two PM: Fish with locals. This is a trip out with the local fishermen where they’ll explain/discuss how they fished in the past, what’s happened to the fisheries, what’s happening now and then you’ll go catch some fish for the night’s meal which you will have with the fisherman’s family. We were pioneers in developing this fishing with locals program with the National Park. The commercial fishermen must give up their commercial fishing license irrevocably to be able to have the license to take visitors out fishing. For the environment this means instead of harvesting thousands of fish a year to survive, they only harvest hundreds, all of which are eaten here thus also reducing the carbon footprint of importing or exporting food. For the fishermen themselves this allows them direct contact with people from outside the Galapagos (one of our “hearts” is sponsoring a fisherman’s son to study in the US) and for our visitors it allows them a glimpse into a different life style and a first hand account of the history of life in the Galapagos.

Day Three: All day chartered boat trip to Isla de Lobos. Snorkeling with rays, turtles, sharks and sea lions. Visit nesting grounds of Frigate Birds, Pelicans, Boobies, etc. Roam gorgeous, deserted, pristine beaches that could make travel posters cry.

Day Four: All day tour of the far side of the island: Commune with the Giant Tortoises in their reserve, visit the local farms where much of the food provided is grown, bananas, bamboo, papaya, guavas etc. People are often surprised at how entertaining this visit actually is. Visit Puerto Chino (pristine isolated beach) and El Junco, the highest elevation on the island and volcano crater now filled with water.

We have also been pioneering a program with local farmers to purchase produce from them. The town has grown accustomed to purchasing its produce from the continent where the large corporate farms can afford to grow, ship the produce and sell for a price that has made farming here a non profitable enterprise. We know generally months in advance how many people are coming and can go to the farmers and tell them on this date we are going to need X number of tomatoes, lettuce, etc. Many of these crops they can plant and grow knowing they will have a secure market for them.

Day 5: Early morning travel to Isabela Island. This involves a short inter island plane flight. The flight is very scenic and an opportunity few tourists receive to view the Galapagos Islands from the air. The plane lands in Puerto Villamil, Isabela where you will check into Casa de Marita.

The town fronts a long sand beach where occasionally flamingos can be seen wading in the surf. We have scheduled for you with your guide to join an existing tour that will head out to Tintoreas, that afternoon to see penguins etc. The reason for joining this tour this way is that they want an unjustifiable amount of money to charter that three hour trip. It is something you definitely want to see though and you will have your own guide with you.

White tip shark and eagle ray in canal on Tintoreas. Photos taken from dry land.

Day Six: Chartered boat tour to Tuneles. This is a really remarkable spot few visitors to the Galapagos get to see, the geologic formations, the wild life in and out of the water. Really one of the greatest hits of the Galapagos.

Day Seven: Hike to volcano Sierra Negra.

Active volcano crater last erupted 2005

Day Eight: Early AM commuter boat to Santa Cruz, check into Hotel Déjà vu and then tour the highlands (wild giant tortoises and lava tubes. Scavenger awards ceremony this night!

Day Nine: Transfer to airport where you’ll catch your return flight to Guayaquil and the Wyndham Hotel.

Day Ten: Transfer to airport where you’ll catch your international flight. Hopefully you will be leaving with lots of photos and a warm place in your heart for the Galapagos and Ecuador.
