Ashworth 2 Refurbishment Update

At the February 2012 EC meeting, EC noted progress regarding the Ashworth complex refurbishment proposals.

The £9.5M project is in three phases. Phase 1 (one floor and enabling infrastructure) has been completed. A commitment of £3.5M from various sources (CAC, CSCE, CMVM and the Wolfson Foundation) has been secured to deliver Phase 2 which involves the refurbishment of 2 further floors.

Tender documents for Phase 2 enabling and main works are currently being prepared and in order to keep to programme (completion by Spring 2013), decisions regarding acceptance of enabling and main works contracts will be needed before the September 2012 meeting, therefore, it is important to be in a position to accept tenders, outwith the cycle, under delegated arrangements.

Completion of Phase 3 will fully resolve the serious building compliance issues, will improve space and energy efficiency and provide the remaining capacity needed to enable the reconfiguration of teaching spaces, and will provide a state-of-the-art research environment for our growing excellence in infection, immunity and evolution. Proposals for Phase 3 will come forward to a future meeting of Estates Committee.

EC is invited to note the update and endorse a recommendation to go to tender for Phase 2 enabling and main works; and, provided that tenders are affordable within the overall budget, accept tenders, under approved delegated arrangements, on the recommendation of the Project Board.
