Club Championships 2013

Beverley and East Riding Lawn Tennis Club held the finals of its closed championships in perfect conditions at the historic Seven Corners Lane courts. On display were club tennis trophies dating back to 1880 when the Club was formed.

The men’s singles cup was won by head coach Tom Davies for the eighth time as he took on former champion Chris Tullock in a match which provided spectators with a feast of fast accurate tennis. In the absence through injury of holder Megan Moor a new name was added to the ladies’ singles trophy. Rosie Prescott,16 overcame Cordelia Cavill,13, after an exciting and fluctuating opening set, by 7 – 5, 6 – 1.

Angus Whitehead and Andrew Addison took the men’s doubles title after a close deciding final set with Richard Boal and Neil Wharton 7 - 5, 4 – 6, 6 – 3. The ladies doubles final saw Dawn Penney and Johanna Boal proving a little too strong for Kate Prescott and Sue Davies as they won 6 – 4, 6 – 1.

Whitehead was back on court in the mixed doubles, this time partnering Emma Hughes against the experience of former holder Natalie Plaistowe and Jim Sturt. In another close contest it was Whitehead and Hughes who took the title with a 6 – 4, 6 – 3 scoreline.

The veterans’ events provided a tense three set battle before John Hickling and Keith Marston took the men’s trophy beating holder Glenn Rangeley and Kevin McIntyre 6 – 7, 6 – 2, 7 – 5. The women’s event found Johanna Boal taking her second title of the day as she partnered Sue Fuller to a 6 – 4, 4 – 6, 6 – 3 victory over Carol Mounstephen and Pam Sleap.

Jack Colthup won the boys’ under-18 final against Nathan Mathers. Cordelia Cavill returned to the action to take the combined under–18 and under-14 girls’ titles in a closely contested battle with Georgia Vella. Older brother Oscar Cavill was on court as well taking the under-14 boys’ cup by 6 – 1, 6 – 4.
