On Tuesday our FFA Chapter went to the Southeastern Regional Rally held at SoutheasternCommunity College, where we competed in many competitions and were rewarded for our proficiency applications. Peyton Fisher won second place for her participation in the Prepared Speaking competition, Chris Bullock won second place for Extemporaneous Speaking, and Maeghan Livingston placed third in the Creed Contest. The Forestry team placed third in the region. Rachel Williams, Hillary Whitley, Matt Evans, Jonathan McPherson, and Allen Paulley were the participants for this event. Clay Graham, Kasey Leggett, Amanda Freeman, Michelle Willoughby, Will Graham and Beverly Vause were on the Parliamentary Procedure team.Although the team did extremely well, they did not place in the top three in the Region. The Agriculture Mechanics Team was made up of Tyler Davis, Jake Leggett, Zach Britt and Lucas Baxley. Devan Floyd, Robert Leggett, Cameron Powell and Jason Ivey competed on the Introduction to Horticulture team. The Chapter was also awarded a second place plaque for Hunter Safety and Farm Business Management. The Fairmont FFA Chapter also had many proficiency applications to place within the top three. Our award winners were Michelle Willoughby, Sarah Graham, Lucas Baxley, Amanda Freeman, Tyler Davis, Alex Freeman, Adam Smith, Will Graham, Hillary Whitley, Joseph Willoughby and Beverly Vause.

Last night we held our annual FFA Banquet to reward our hard working FFA members for a job well done. We honored our retiring officers and installed our new officer team. This concludes the year for our FFA Chapter, until later this summer when we will compete at the North Carolina State Convention.

According to many students and staff, the 2008 yearbook was a success! The theme, MyFairmont, seemed popular among the students. It was brought to attention that there were many errors in the book, but overall the Yearbook Staff worked hard and did a fantastic job at putting our book of memories together.

This year’s book seemed to grab the attention of everyone, not just certain groups. All of the different shots made it diverse. You can tell that a lot of hard work was put into it.

Dr. Jones seemed pleased with the first yearbook of her regime as principal, although she has not really had time to look at it closely.

Most students seemed to like the book as a whole, although some felt the same people were in a lot of the pictures.

As always, Mrs. Floyd thought the staff did a good job. She said, “It takes a lot of yelling for me to get the best out of some students, and get everything done by the deadlines, but in the end, I think they turned out a good book. Yes, it has mistakes, but it is a student project and students are not perfect. Maybe next year’s staff will turn out a perfect book!

“I would like to apologize publicly to Ashleigh Miller because her portrait was omitted from the senior pages. I haven’t figured out how that happened and I am sorry for any embarrassment and hurt feelings this may have caused. It certainly was not done intentionally or spitefully.”

Please remember, yearbook themes are made up. There is no real myfairmont.com!

The Lady Tornadoes played in the first round of the playoffs against South Brunswick on May 13. They were defeated 0-10. Sencerae Locklear pitched the entire game. The leading batters for the game were Amber Hunt who went 1-2 and Ashley Jacobs who went 1-1. This was the last game for the Lady Tornadoes, but there weren’t any seniors so they should be ready for next year.

On Friday May 9 the Varsity Baseball team played Croatan at home. The score for the game was 1-3. Pitcher was Michael Bass who had 11 strike outs. Leading hitter was Chad Hunt. Coach Thorndyke said, “The Varsity Baseball Team ended a great season Friday night with a 1-3 loss in the playoffs. This was the first time since 1983 that Fairmont played a home playoff game. The players put forth a great effort but fell short. Congrats to the Varsity Baseball players and best of luck to the seniors.”

The Tennis Regionals were held on Friday May 9th in Greenville, NC. The two players that made it to the regionals were Jarrett Stephens and Aaron McLean. They both lost in the first round against two of the best tennis players in the state. Jarrett played against a player from First Flight and Aaron played a player from Whiteville. Aaron and Jarrett had to draw a name out of a hat to see who they would have to play.

Since they are only losing four seniors, next year should be a good one for Men’s Tennis.
