Aboriginal Teacher Education Scholarship
Guidelines for Applicants
The Northern Territory (NT) Department of Education (DoE) is committed to building the Aboriginal* educator workforce in the Northern Territory. The Aboriginal Teacher Education Scholarship program contributes to this objective and provides financial support to Aboriginal students studying full-time in undergraduate, or post graduate initial teacher education courses at Charles Darwin University (CDU).
Eligibility
Aboriginal residents of the Northern Territory are eligible to apply for this scholarship. **
This includes:
- Students currently studying a CDU initial teacher education course.
- Persons eligible to enrol in a CDU initial teacher education course.
Scholarship Funding
The Scholarship provides successful applicantswith $15,000 per year (in two half payments of $7,500) for up to 4 years for a Bachelor of Education or up to 2 years for the Master of Teaching at CDU.
Application Process
Applications will open on Monday 27 November 2017 and must be received by the closing date of Friday 2 March 2018. Applicants will be required to provide:
- A completed application form;
- Names and contact details of two professional and one personal referee; and
- Evidence of Aboriginal descent.
If applicants are shortlisted they will be required to attend an interview during the selection process. This may be in person or via telephone.
Applications will be assessed by a selection panel. If the application is successful, you will need to:
- Provide proof of acceptance into a CDU Initial Teacher Education (ITE) course from SATAC;
- Provide proof of enrolment in units at CDU;
Please note: At the time you apply for the scholarship, proof of enrolment is not required.
- Maintain a pass grade or above for all units;
- Provide a copy of official academic results at the end of each semester as well as proof of enrolment for the next semester (where applicable); and
- Accept the scholarship terms and conditions through a signed agreement.
*Please note that the use of the term Aboriginal is inclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
**Further detail of what is required to qualify as a resident of the Northern Territory will be provided in the Terms and Conditions for this scholarship.
The Department of Education will:
- Support scholarship recipients to network with each other;
- Assist scholarship recipients to connect with mentors and relevant academic support providers; and
- Guide scholarship recipients through the teacher recruitment process on completion of their course.
The Department of Education recommends scholarship applicants seek independent personal, academic and financial advice before accepting a scholarship offer.
Commonwealth (such as Abstudy, or other Centrelink payments), State or other benefits or payments may be subject to any scholarship payments. It is the responsibility of scholarship recipients to notify either Centrelink or other Commonwealth, State or other body that they are successful in gaining a scholarship.
