L. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
v “Biodiversity and Yoruba Practice of Igbo Oro”. This work discovers that species extinctions, occasioned by destructive anthropogenic activities, occur 1,000 times higher than the natural losses of species. And that 1 out of every 20 species is prone to extinction by year 2060. It is against this backdrop that this work draws attention to the relevance of ethics of biodiversity in the quest for sustainable and safe environment. The centerpiece of ethics of biodiversity is the claim that every organism is intrinsically valuable and possesses the right to exist even if its existence does not directly benefit man. Therefore, the paper argues that the Yoruba traditional practice of igbo oro (Sacred grove or sacred forest) is pragmatically compatible with the ethics of biodiversity. The argument thus debunks the position held in certain quarters that Yoruba wilderness conservation (igbo oro) is only for the fulfillment of religious aspirations of the Yoruba.
v “The Role of Ethics in Environmental Security of Mega City in Developing Nations: A Case of Lagos Nigeria”. The work examines the urbanization tendency of the Lagos mega - city, the threats to the components of the environment, its susceptibility and vulnerability to climate change and climate variability with emphasis on balancing the relationship which exists between human and nonhuman components of the environment. To this end, the study suggests sustainable approaches to the environmental management in view of climate change in order to achieve water and environmental security in the Lagos mega - city.
v “Hunger and Food in Nigeria: A Philosophical Interrogation”. This work interrogates the problem of food security in Nigeria. As an adage in Yorubaland says “ti ebi ba ti kuro ninu ise, ise buse” meaning, once hunger is conquered then poverty is alleviated. This adage, no doubt, echoes the importance of food to the life of a person as well as to the sustenance of a country. Surprisingly, Nigeria is one of the countries in the world faced with hunger despite its richness in human and natural resources. In 2013, the former Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Akinwumi Adesina, revealed that nothing less than 13 million Nigerians were suffering from hunger. His successor, Audu Ogbeh, laments in 2016 how almost $20billion is expended annually by Nigerians on food importation. Using hermeneutic method, this study discovers that food production declines drastically in Nigeria when the country becomes a major exporter of crude oil. Some of the attempts made by the Nigerian government to achieve food security are Operation Feed the Nation (OFN), Green Revolution (GR), River Basin Scheme (RBS), National Accelerated Food Production Project (NAFPP), but cases of malnutrition and under-nutrition are on the rise in the country. Our concern is that if the people of a country are hunger stricken, the act of governance becomes a big problem. In this connection, the paper argues that the attainment of economic development will continue to be hampered unless Nigeria’s agricultural policy is guided by the ethics of benevolence. This is germane since hunger is inimical to infrastructural development and environmental sustainability of any country.
