Solihull Local Pharmaceutical Committee
5th August 2015
As most of you will be aware, PSNC have announced that it has reached agreement with the NHS for a new Advanced Service – a Flu Vaccination service.The flu vaccination service will launch in September 2015 and from that point community pharmacies will be able to offer NHS flu vaccinations to adult patients aged 18 and over at the time of vaccination, who are defined as at risk in the Annual Flu letter(including pregnant women) and all patients aged 65 years old and over..
Pharmacy contractors will receive £9.14 per administered dose of vaccination as well as reimbursement of vaccine costs. The fee comprises remuneration of £7.64 per administered dose and an additional fee of £1.50 per vaccination to recognise costs that will be incurred in order to provide the service (e.g. training and clinical waste disposal costs).
A service specification and guidance for flu vaccinations are being developed and will be published in due course.
This is a great opportunity for community pharmacy to not only generate new revenue, but show what an important contribution community pharmacy can make in reducing the current burden on the NHS, and improving the public’s health and wellbeing.
Currently the LPC are hoping to negotiate a contract for a domiciliary service allowing pharmacists to undertake ‘offsite’ vaccinations in the community (this would be a Local Enhanced Service).
In support of this the LPC are asking for expressions of interest for those contractors who would be interested in providing this service (subject to the contract developed).
Could all contractors who might wish to be involved in such a service please notify the LPC Secretary

National Flu Vaccination Service
- If you already provide flu vaccinations either privately or on the NHS, consider with your team how you can get ready to switch to the national service later this year (more guidance on this will be available in due course);
- If you do not already provide flu vaccinations, consider what you might need to do to start when the national service launches, reviewing training options and other preparation (more guidance will be available on this in due course);
- Consider any training requirements for you and your team – how will you ensure that there is always someone available to provide the service, and how can you maximise opportunities to vaccinate patients;
- Consider your stock requirements and procure the vaccine from your suppliers – a list of possible vaccinations is included inthe annual flu letter;
- Consider your SOPs and whether these will need adjustment following the launch of the new service, for example will you allow patients to book appointments and if so how will this work;
- Sign up to PSNC’s Newsletters atpsnc.org.uk/emailto ensure you don’t missout as more information on the service becomes available.
