TASK

You have been commissioned to determine the effect of feeding two rations differing in protein content to broiler chicks.Your report will make specific reference to the effect this has on the growth and development of the subjects as well as the economic feasibility of utilising either of the two rations.

You must design a trial and carry out it out and make fully justified recommendations addressing the terms of reference mentioned above.

You will maintain a diary of your activities, measurements and observations.

The Report

Your final report detailing your findings to the farmer commissioning it will be in the following format.

Title

Aim – What do you hope to achieve or discover by conducting this trial

Hypothesis – What do you expect the result to be? This should take the form of astatement predicting the effect of altering the protein ration. (Think IF…..THEN)

Introduction/Background Information – This section will contain information about; the poultry industry, chicken physiology, growth and development, feed rations, protein in feeds and the effect of protein increases in similar experiments.

Method – Materials, experimental design, step by step procedure.

Results – Data tables, graphs and diagrams accompanied by brief statements referring to the main points.

Discussion – Explanation of changes that occur due to differing treatments. Results found are related to the background information.

Conclusion – Summing up of the trial results, making recommendations on which feed to use based on growth cost and time. Suggestions on improving the trial and the direction of future research need to be included.

Broiler Trial – Marking Scheme

A / B / C / D / E
PS - Organising / Accurately organises data into tables and graphs. Method section is an accurate and highly detailed account of experimental procedure / Mostly accurately organises data into tables and graphs. Method section is an accurate and detailed account of experimental procedure / With sufficient accuracy organises data into tables and graphs. Method section is a mostly accurate of experimental procedure. / Organises data into tables and graphs without sufficient accuracy to represent the data. Method section is an inaccurate account of experimental procedure / Organise some data into tables or graphs. Method is too brief or inaccurate to convey meaningful instructions for experimental procedure.
PS - Analysis / Highly detailed analysis of experimental data with elaborations outlining directions for future research. / Mostly detailed analysis of experimental data with some elaboration. / Mostly detailed analysis of experimental data / Some analysis of experimental data / Very limited analysis of experimental data
C –Presentation/ Communication / Written presentation is original, informativeand accurate and conforms to written and graphical convention.
Oral presentation thoroughly engages
