Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT)

Room Clearing

  1. Unit Goals (long range—how does this unit fit with year-long goals?)

This unit of instruction will give soldiers a basic understanding of how to conduct room clearing operations in a MOUT environment.

Learning components will include:

Module 1: Safety- Weapon safety and movement within an urban environment.

Module 2: Room clearing techniques- Movement of individuals within the team.

Module 3: Hallway clearing- Movement of individuals within the team.

  1. Specific ways to relate goal(s) to curriculum (team/department, system and state frameworks)

Module 1: This module on safety, relates to the overall goal by giving soldiers the knowledge of how to operate their weapon safely, in order to not injure their fellow teammates while conducting operations in a MOUT environment.

Module 2: This module relates to the overall goal, by giving soldiers the knowledge of the individual responsibilities involved for each person within the team, and learn how to effectively operate as a an team during room clearing operations.

Module 3: This module relates to the overall goal of room clearing by understanding the techniques involved in continuing room clearing operations if there are multiple rooms, or a hallway.

  1. Characteristics of the students for whom this unit is intended (needs in the cognitive, affective, physical, and social areas)

Students are adults, who have had basic military training, and are physically and mentally fit. Students will be of the rank E-5 (Sgt.) and below, as this training will focus on small teams. Students will all be high school graduates, or have a GED as this is the minimum for entry into the military.

  1. Student’s Present Level of Performance and Knowledge (Do the students have the adequate knowledge to complete the unit successfully? What prerequisite skills must the students have to complete the unit content? Include technology skills.

Since this training will be on a computer initially, in a classroom environment, the student needs to have very basic computer skills, and knowledge of how to navigate on a website.

Other skills in which these soldiers should possess are: basic weapons safety and familiarization training, rifle marksmanship training, individual movement techniques training, and hand and arm signals training.

Students need to be able to comprehend and follow instructions, be able to work under stress, and mentally stable.

Students must be physically fit, being able to work with heavy body armor on, in extreme conditions, and be able to shoot, move, and communicate. Student needs to have strength to drag fellow teammates to safety if needed.

  1. Classroom Layout and grouping of students (Where will the learning take place? How will the room be organized? How will students be grouped (whole group, individuals, pairs, small groups, etc.)

This would be an initial web based instruction on room clearing. Students should individually log into a computer at their unit, and education center, or from their personal computers. Afterwards training would be instructor led, with students grouped together in teams of four, at a range facility that could handle MOUT operations.

  1. Introductory procedures (How will you introduce the unit and the goals?)

Students will be introduced to the importance of MOUT operations, and will be told how the goals of each module will help them understand the basics, in order to work effectively, as an individual part of a team during MOUT operations.

  1. Materials and media (any resource, persons or materials: be as specific as possible. Identify resource, its availability, how it is to be used and why.

Students will have the availability of a website with the unit of instruction, which includes three modules. Also made available will be links to websites, books and documents that were used as doctrine for the training. Computers will be individual computers, or made available through an education center, or computer lab. Students will attend the hands on portion of instruction as a unit, with helmet, body armor, canteens, weapon, magazines, battle dress uniform, eye protection, and first aid kit.

Unit will provide enough blank ammunition for 20 rounds per person, and provide for arrangement of meals, and water. The blank ammunition will be used by soldiers during the final phase of instruction, after they have completed a lecture period of instruction, then 4 walk through period of instructions. The final phase of instruction will be a practical exercise in which the student will perform each position within the 4 person team during room clearing.

Instructors will arrange for a MOUT range facility, or shoot house, and medical personnel with equipment. White boards with easels, and instruction materials with images.

  1. Visuals (although this is part of the materials and media, I want this to be a specific part of your plan). Identify at least EIGHT static graphic visuals (NOT links to video clips or websites, please) that you will be creating and use, their purpose, and design.

There will be 4 graphic visuals on weapons safety. One visual showing weapon positioning and trigger discipline. One visual will show the positioning of the weapon during clearing movements, one visual for weapon malfunctions during movement and one for each different weapons status. The purpose of the visuals is for educational or instructional support in teaching the importance of safety; they will be used for the web based and the training lecture during the hands on portion of training.

There will be approximately another 6 visual graphics for showing the movement of team members during room clearing and hallway clearing procedures. Each visual will show an individual’s movement throughout the entire room clearing procedure. One of the visuals will be the positioning of the team prior to room entry and one visual for hallway or follow on rooms. The purpose of the visuals are educational, and will be used for both the web based training and the hands on portion of training.

  1. Assessment and evaluation of learner understanding (Identify the methods the teacher will use to identify student learning levels and needs. Describe when these will be used during the unit)

An assessment of the learners will be done after the web based training with a short quiz of approximately 10 questions. This will be used not for grading purposes, but to see where the student’s level of knowledge is, and try to identify those that may need additional help during the practical hands on training. The students will be assessed during the final phase of hands on testing, when there is blank fire being conducted. There will be four iterations of room clearing with blank fire, and it is a 4 person team, so each person will be graded on their performance from a pre-made check sheet on performance tasks. The students will be made aware of these performance tasks. Failure of three or more performance tasks will result in a failing grade and student will be given additional training and re-tested.

  1. Relate assessment instruments to the outcomes stated in the goals.

After the web based training the assessment instrument is just finding out if the student has gained a very basic understanding of MOUT procedures. The assessment tool used to evaluate the student’s performance during the final iterations will show whether or not the student has gained the knowledge needed to conduct MOUT operations safely.
