Intralingual Skills Development

8:45 a.m. – 12:00 noon

Many sign language interpreters are non-native users of American Sign Language and often spend much of their education and training on improving their ASL skills. Less attention is often given to improving their English skills. Having well-developed and well-controlled intralingual (knowledge and skills within a language) skills is a pre-curser to developing interlingual (knowledge and skills across languages) skills. This workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to develop their intralingual skills in English and American Sign Language through individual and small-group activities with focus on memory skills development and comprehension, and explore ways to improve their fluency in each of these languages. This workshop will also provide an overview of language acquisition and learning theories and allow participants to explore their own language acquisition processes.

Get It? Got It? Huh?

Translating Humor from English to ASL

1:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

People often use English in ways that connote double meanings - at times both literal and figurative - particularly when used to show humor or sarcasm. The literal meaning is straight-forward and follows the words of the original as closely as possible. The figurative meaning is less obvious and often involves figures of speech. An interpreter, upon hearing phrases with double meanings, must understand both the literal and figurative meanings and decide which meaning to translate. This workshop will give participants an opportunity to "play" with English. We will focus on puns, double-entrendre, janus words, and other specialized uses of language.

Julie Simon has been an American Sign Language/English Interpreter for over 27 years and an interpreter educator for over 20 years, having taught in both pre-service and in-service settings on a wide range of topics, and holds RID certification (CI & CT). Prior to opening The Language Door in March 2007, she served for over 11 years as Administrator for the Western Region (formerly Region X) InterpreterEducationCenter at WesternOregonUniversity.
