Health Science Program Zero Tolerance Policy

The Health Science Programhas a zero tolerance stance in regard to alcohol and unlawful drug use for students in the Health Science Program. It is the policy of the Health Science Program and participating health care facilities to facilitate a safe and productive learning environment that is drug and alcohol free for the protection of patients, employees, and student.

  1. The use of controlled substances is inconsistent with the behavior expected from a student in the Health Science Program.
  1. This policy pertains to a student on probation for alcohol use and/or unlawful drug use prior to enrolling in a course within the Health Science Program.
  1. This policy pertains to a student who tests positive for illegal drugs during the drug screening for the unpaid learning experience.
  1. The policy prohibits the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of alcohol, illegal drugs, and/or legal drugs obtained illegally by the student prior to and/or currently in a course in the Health Science Program.

a.The student is prohibited from possession, and/or consumption of alcohol.

b.The student is prohibited from the use and/or possession of illegal drugs.

c.Sanctions for violations of this policy will require a mandated evaluation and investigation.

  1. The student will be permanently removed from the program if the investigation finds student in violation of the policy.
  2. The findings of fact, any particular circumstances, and prior record of the student will be factors considered when determining the student’s removal from the program.
  1. The policy includes other alcohol-related misconduct.
  1. The policy includes illegal use of a prescription medication which is the use of any prescription drug without proper Medical authorization, including, but not limited to:

a.The use of a prescription drug issued in the name of someone other than the person using it

b. The use of a controlled substance prescribed by a physician and/or obtained outside of the U.S.

  1. Reasonable suspicion/ cause:

a.A student who exhibits evidence of physical symptoms of being under the influence and/or patterns of abnormal or erratic behavior will be assessed immediately.

b.Appropriate school personnel will be notified in regard to the reasonable suspicion/cause of the student’s behavior/actions.

c.Documentation of the incident, referral made to appropriate personnel, assessment, and if further investigation is warranted.

  1. ATC Dean of Instruction will be notified of any reasonable suspicion/cause for further investigation.
