Glossary

Process / A process is a set of logically related activities that combine to deliver something of value (e.g. products, services, or information) to a customer. Processes are the vehicles through which work gets done.
Process Owner / The process owner is the person or group accountable for effective process performance.
Process Purpose / The purpose is the overarching goal of the process; the reason or highest level need why the process exists.
Process Performance Criteria / Measurable indicators or testable statements that can be used to assess adequate process performance.
SIPOC / A SIPOC is a tool for building a common understanding of a process context among stakeholders, including high-level gaps in process performance. It sets the stage for follow-up process mapping activities, root cause analysis, and identification of improvement opportunities.
Process Inputs/Outputs / Products, services, information, materials, influence, etc. provided to a process (inputs) or received from a process (outputs).
Process Customers / Process customers are those who receive the outputs of the process.
Process Suppliers / Process suppliers are those who provide the inputs to the process.
Output Gaps / These are gaps that occur when there is a difference between what customers expect from a process and what they actually get from it.
Input Gaps / These are gaps that occur when there is a difference between what the process needs from suppliers and what it actually gets from them.
Process Gaps / These are gaps that occur when there is a difference between the process original design or desired potential and how it actually works.
