Activity: Locate a Store Using Google Maps

I had to re-do the instructions so that the students could do them on our school’s computers. Google with Maps does not come up when you click on the ‘e’ for the Internet. It opens up to the Adult EAL home page. So, the students were instructed to go to Favourites and then to Google, etc.

Some of the instructions in Activity A are for students and some are for the

teacher. I re-did the instructions so that they were for the students.

Activity B: When you Google “Superstore, Winnipeg”, you also get other

kinds of Superstores, not only the Real Canadian Superstores. I changed

the instructions for the students to Google “Real Canadian Superstore,

Winnipeg”. This was less confusing for the students and they could then

focus on the task of finding information about the Real Canadian Superstores.

They are going to do the Outcome Assessment Task this week. I will let you

how that went.

I ended up doing 3 activity sheets instead of the 2 that were in the original

activity I downloaded:

Activity A: Using Google Map to Find your School

Activity B: Using Google Map to Find your House or Apartment

Activity C: Using Google Map to Find Real Canadian Superstores in

Winnipeg

It was a great activity. The first day, I had the students do Activity A and Activity B with a partner, if needed. There was some time left at the end of the class. I told the students to Google their address in their first country. Most had never done this and had a great time finding their streets and zooming in to see their houses or apartments.

The next time they were in the computer lab, they did Activity C without

a partner and with limited help from my volunteer and me.
