7.4.1 Risky Business: In investing $6,000 of a couple’s money, a financial planner put some of it into a savings account paying 6% annual interest. The rest was invested in a riskier mini-mall development plan paying 12% annually. The combined interest earned for the first year was $540. How much money was invested at each rate?

7.4.2 Nuts to That: A merchant wants to mix peanuts with cashews to get 48 pounds of mixed nuts that will be sold at $4 per pound. If the peanuts cost $3 per pound and the cashews cost $6 per pound, how many pounds of each type of nut should the merchant use? (I know, peanuts aren’t really nuts.)

7.4.3 Nickeled and Dimed to Death? A bag contains $3.50 in nickels and dimes. If there are 50 coins in the bag, how many nickels and how many dimes are there in the bag? Assume the bag contains only nickels and dimes and don’t get caught holding it.
