To: Prospective HSAA Middle School Football Parents & Athletes

From: Jim Kinville, Head Coach

Date: July 24, 2006

Dear Parents:

I wanted to take this opportunity and re-introduce myself to you all and provide an update on the HSAAMiddle School football program.

Results of Conditioning Session in May/June

•We kicked off the HSAAMiddle School football program in May, with a 4week conditioning program.

•We completed the conditioning program with approximately 16 boys who were interested in being part of the 2006 HSAAMiddle School football program.

•Due to the minimum number of boys and lack of experience, we felt it was best to field a 6-Man Team for the 2006 season.

•We communicated with the parents at the last conditioning practice and in follow-up emails that we needed a commitment by June 30 so that we could finalize plans for the upcoming season.

•As of July 1, 2006, we received commitments from 10 families who participated in the 4week conditioning program.

•Since July 1, we have been contacted by approximately 11 new families who are interested in participating in the program.

•On July 17-18, we held evaluations for all interested players with the purpose of beginning to assess talent, experience, and level of commitment.

•Based on the growing number of interested families, we have decided to conduct tryouts on August 7 – 8. It will be our desire to have a maximum of 15 boys on the team. This would allow for adequate playing time, while fielding a competitive team.

Conditioning and Heat

The Texas heat is certainly a variable that we will adjust to as needed. Our number one priority and responsibility is to provide a safe environment for the players which includemonitoring the heat. In order for the players to be prepared it is vitally important that the boys are coming to the start of the season in shape. If they are not in adequate athletic shape they will have difficulty performing and it will be threatening to them physically. At the conclusion of the spring conditioning program I provided the boys and their families with a simple conditioning regimen for the players to follow prior to the start of the season. I have included another copy for your reference:

HSAAMiddle School Football Team

Off-Season Conditioning Program

(Minimum 3-4 days per week)

Cardio – (Options)
Running / 2 – 3 miles or
Biking / 4 – 6 miles or
Swimming / ½ mile or
Jump Roping / 15 sets of 100
Strength Training
Push-Ups / 7 sets of 15 and
Sit-Ups / 7 sets of 20
Stretching – 10 minutes
  • Drink plenty of fluids daily—preferably water
  • Eat responsibly

I would strongly suggest that if your sons have not been participating in a conditioning program that they start immediately. The start of season is less than 2 weeks away.

Lastly, it is vitally important that the boys stay hydrated throughout the day. Notice that Isaid throughout the day, athletes can not go all day without drinking plenty of fluids (preferably water) and come to practice in a partially dehydrated state and expect to get hydrated throughout practice. The body will not respond adequately to this especially in the high temperatures. So, please encourage your sons to consume plenty of water throughout the day. We will also provide numerous water breaks throughout practice.

Physical & Physician Release

IMPORTANT: All interested players MUST have a completed physician release to play football when they arrive on August 7, 2006. Please make sure that your son’s physical is scheduled immediately. Simply make the physician’s office aware that you are in need of a physical for your son to play football.

About the Coaches:

We are very appreciative that God has given us the time, patience and opportunity to participate with our son’s in the football program. We are equally appreciative that we will be able to teach your son’s the game of football and be part of their development on and off the field.

Jim Kinville – Head Coach

I have had the privilege over the last several years of coaching my son in several sports, including football and basketball. Growing up in Michigan I had the opportunity to play several sports including a couple years of college football.

Matt Flanagan – Assistant Coach

Coach Flanagan has been very active coaching and assisting with HSAA and several other activities with his children, including, soccer, basketball, softball and scouting. Coach Flanagan enjoyed playing many years of soccer while growing up in Florida.

Charles Bryant – Assistant Coach

Coach Bryant also has a history of playing sports growing up including football and his family has been active with the HSAA Basketball program.

Celia Kinville – Team Mom

Celia has graciously accepted the responsibility of being our team Mom and assisting in the organization of games, practice schedules, and communication to the families. Please do not hesitate to offer your time and talents to Celia as she could always use some support.

As coaches, we are committed to providing the players with a safe environment but also an environment that they can grow spiritually and developmentally. With the help of our faith, we will aspire to the following Coaching principles:

Coaching Principles

  • Make Football fun and use a vehicle for total development of the player
  • Football is about the player, not the coach or the parent
  • Provide an environment for the player that is conducive to learning, is supportive, is risk-free, and is characterized by positive reinforcement
  • Listen – Coaches don’t have all the answers
  • Communicate clear expectations to the players and families
  • Develop team discipline that is internally generated not externally driven
  • Focus our efforts on continuous improvement of all players
  • Sportsmanship, Sportsmanship, Sportsmanship
  • Provide a good role model for players and parents
  • Encourage and include parental involvement
  • Represent HSAA with Pride, Respect, and Sportsmanship

Costs

In order for us to field a team, we will be responsible for the purchasing of equipment, uniforms, and incidentals. HSAA has a relationship with a sports outfitter in Richardson where we will be purchasing our equipment once we make the final decision about the team. The estimated cost to participate on the team (including equipment except cleats) will be $330.00. These costs will be finalized the first week of the season, and checks will be made to HSAA. In the event you already have equipment, this will need to be evaluated and approved by the coaches. Please do not go out and purchase equipment on your own.

We look forward to seeing you on August 7, 2006. In the event you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at or my cell# (214) 213-8690.

I would also encourage you to go to the HSAA website for additional announcements and to check for additions or corrections on the game schedule.

Sincerely,

Jim Kinville
