Images from The Stolen Party

The picture that stays in my mind after reading this story is a picture of a girl carrying cake. In my mind the girl is wearing a beautiful white dress. Her shoes are shiny. Her chin is in the air. She walks very proud. It is like she is at a wedding. She doesn’t know that a woman who is watching her has her hand in her purse. You can’t see inside the purse but the woman is counting her money to see how much she can pay the girl. I picture this because I hate the woman for not noticing how proud the girl is or how she got so ready for the party and I think the woman is dumb and she should learn to pay more attention.

The image that stays in my mind is one that’s not even in the story. It’s an image of the palace that Rosaura wants to live in. It’s a palace all of white marble with a fancy stair. Rosaura has a room in it all her own, with a pink bed with ruffles and a canopy. I imagine that the room she has in the story is a little room she share’s with her mother. I imagine this picture because I think about living in a palace sometimes too, and what it would be like to be a princess and not sleep in a hot apartment. Emily, sixth grade

The image that I see in my mind is Rosaura’s arm stretched out. It is graceful and beautiful like a ballerina. It is waiting for the bracelet she expects. I see it all stretched out like a dancer. Then I see it drooping, not rising up because it won’t take the money. I see this because I think it is the most beautiful moment of the story. It is when we see that Rosaura is still beautiful and still proud – and it is before her eyes get cold – I don’t want to think about that moment because it makes me so sad.
