Hattiesburg, with a population of approximately 70,000, is the educational and medical hub of Southern Mississippi. Hattiesburg is located 90 miles south of Jackson, 75 miles north of Mississippi’s Gulf Coast; and 105 miles north of New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Office of Community Service Learning (OCSL).

OCSL, created in 1992, serves as the University’s comprehensive resource center for student-run community service programs as well as academic service-learning. Currently, OCSL partners with 85 community agencies by assisting with matching volunteers and service-learning students with the needs of the agency. The mission of OCSL is to foster a lifelong commitment to community service and civic responsibility and to provide opportunities that combine learning and serving, build community and culture, strengthen leadership skills and ethics, and increase awareness of community needs.


Position Job Description

This position will develop, manage, and provide leadership for the Volunteer Clearinghouse as well as coordinate the daily operations of the Office of Community Service Learning. Responsibilities with the Clearinghouse will include working with faculty, students, and community partners. This individual will also serve as the resource person for student-run service programs through OCSL. The individual must also be familiar with community service and service-learning; able to perform multiple tasks with minimum supervision; be able to work in team and individual settings; capable of initiating and completing tasks; and committed to working with diverse populations. Grant writing skills and experience preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform office management duties as necessary for the efficient daily operation of the Office of Community Service Learning.

Coordinate the recruitment, placement, training, and supervision of volunteers and

service-learning students.

Assist with the development and ongoing coordination of community and university partnerships to facilitate service projects.

Serve as the resource staff person for student-run service programs including, but not limited to, VISION student organization advisor and supervisor of practicum students placed in the OCSL.

Coordinate the development, printing, and distribution of all printed materials related to OCSL.

Assist with identifying and developing proposals for grants and other funding sources.

Maintain the database of volunteers, faculty, and community partners who are registered

through OCSL.
