SERVICE MODE

The following tasks can be performed while in service mode:

• Verify the page count.

• Set the page count.

• Set the maintenance count.

• Verify and set the serial number.

• Set the cold reset default. This sets the factory default paper size to either Letter or A4.

• Turn the diagnostic function on or off (for software developer’s use only).

• Clear the event log.

• Use the extended Service mode.

• Reset softswitches.

• Perform a firmware download.

• Recalibrate the document scanner.

• Set the interval at which the PERFORM PRINTER MAINTENANCEmessage appears on the control panel.

Procedure to enter service mode on most older HP printer models:

  1. Hold down SELECT and JOB CANCEL while powering on the printer, until all lights are illuminated and the display is blank. (If the display panel reads INTERNAL TEST at this point, the keys were released too soon. Repeat this step until successful.)
  1. Press MENU, then SELECT. The messageSERVICE MODEis displayed briefly; then the printer automatically begins anINTERNAL TEST. After several seconds, both control panel indicators turn off. (The printer may displayWARMING UPif it has not warmed up completely.) After the printer has warmed up and passed the self test,SERVICE MODEis displayed.
  2. Press MENU once to displaySERVICE MENU.
  1. To exit the service mode, press the GO button.

PIN codes are required to enter service mode on newer HP printer models:

Authorized HP service technicians can use this menu to gain access to printer settings that are reserved for service personnel. The service menu is protected by use of a personal identification number (PIN). When you select SERVICE from the list of menus, you are prompted to type an eight-digit PIN code.

The printer automatically exits the service menu after about one minute if no menu items areselected or changed.

  1. Press the Select () button to open the menus. Use the Up Arrow () button or theDown Arrow () button to scroll to SERVICE, and then press the Select () button.
  1. Press the Up Arrow () button or the Down Arrow () button until the first digit of the PIN code appears (PIN codes listed below). Press the Select () button to save that digit. Repeat this selection procedure until you have typed the entire eight-digit PIN code. You can use theLeft Arrow () button to return to a PIN digit. When the last digit issaved, the service submenu appears on the control-panel display.
  1. Use the Up Arrow () button or the Down Arrow () button to scroll to the service-menu item that you want, and then press the Select () button.
