Goal:

Branch Further Education and Training consists of three Chief Directorates:

  1. School Curriculum for Grades 10 – 12

This Chief Directorate supports the implementation of the National Curriculum Statementin Grades 10 -12 through

  • Subject Advisor and Teacher Training
  • Textbook screening and provision
  • Information Communication Technology – Portal and ICT hard ware and software
  • Monitoring visits to schools and districts
  1. FET Colleges

This Chief Directorate supports skills development programmesespecially the National Certificate (Vocational) through:

  • Three Strategic Planning and Monitoring
  • Planned enrolment based on funding norms
  • Development of Student Support Services
  • Lecturer training
  • College Council Training
  • Textbook screening and provision
  • ICT – hardware and software and business management information systems
  • Monitoring visits
  • Registration of Private Colleges
  1. National Examinations

This Chief Directorate is responsible for policy, planning and conduct of all national examinations in schools, colleges and adult centres.

Branch F Goals for 2009 to 2014

Schools

All Grade 10 – 12 teachers trained to teach the National Curriculum Statement (NCS)

All Grade 10 -12 teachers have laptops, have an e-mail address, are IT capable and use Thutong for teaching and learning

2, 7 million learners or 90% of the cohort enrolled in Grades 10 -12

All Grade 10 – 12 learners have textbooks for each subject

All 12 learners leaving school are IT capable

400 000learners pass the NSC and 30% qualify for degree study

500 Dinaledi Schools are centres of excellence for maths and science

Less than 1 000 schools achieve under 60% pass rate in Grade 12

Colleges

All lecturers trained to deliver National Certificate (Vocational) at one or more levels

All lecturers have laptops, are IT capable and have access to Thutong

500 000 students enrolled on National Certificate (Vocational) programmes

All National Certificate (Vocational) students have textbooks for each subject

All National Certificate (Vocational) students gain 100 hours plus workplace experience before leaving college

All National Certificate (Vocational) students leave college IT capable

Pass rate at Level 2: 60%; pass rate at Level 3: 75%; pass rate at level 4: 90%+

Exams

Establish a South African Assessment and Examinations Board

Produce high quality written exams, practical exams (PATs and ISATs), exam reports, certificates and statistics for:

  • Senior Certificate (2009 – 2011)
  • National Senior Certificate (2009 – 2014)
  • N 3 – N6 (2009 to 2012)
  • National Certificate (Vocational) Level 2 – 4 (2009 – 2014)

PRINT AND ELECTRONIC LEARNING MATERIAL TO SUPPORT GRADE 12 LEARNERS IN 2009

The following print and electronic learning material is available to support Grade 12 learners in 2009.

  1. Study Mate and Studiepêl

The Department of Education will develop two editions of Study Mate. The first 16 page tabloid edition was published in March 2009. The publication was distributed to district offices at the beginning of the second term. This edition comprises the Know the Expert series. The edition assists Grade 12 learners to start planning for the 2009 NSC Examinations and includes the examination Timetable and tips for successful planning.

Studiepêlwill be available on the website at the end of May 2009.

The second edition of Study Mate and Studiepêlwill be distributed during the second term of 2009 and will comprise exemplar question papers from teachers and subject advisors approved by the Department of Education exam panels. The Department of Education will develop the second edition and they will be delivered to district offices.

  1. Independent Newspapers - Study Mate– Past Papers

The Department of Education and Independent Newspapers will produce an edition of Study Mate which will consist of examinations of November 2008 and the supplementary National Senior Certificate examination papers with memoranda. The edition will be available in June 2009 directly from Independent Newspapers. Private companies who wish to sponsor these books to deserving schools are encouraged to contact the Department of Education.

DVDs have been developed which provide tuition in all high enrolment subjects. Expert teachers and Department of Education curriculum specialists assist learners with examination papers, explain common mistakes and give useful tips. These will be available as a package with Study Mate (Past papers).

  1. Sunday Times – Exemplar Question Papers

Avusa Media will publish a 48-page tabloid book comprising exemplar examination papers for Grade 12 learners on the 4th of October 2009. A competition will be run by the Sunday Times for teachers to submit samples of Grade 12 examination papers. The published examination papers will be selected by the Department of Education’s examination panels.

  1. Maths 911 (Liberty Life)/ Matric Matters and DSTV (Mindset)

Liberty Life and Independent Newspapers developed Maths 911 for Grades 11 and 12. The content is new and was approved by Subject Advisors at the Department of Education. 125 000 copies will be provided to Dinaledi schools by the end of May 2009. The content of the books will be uploaded onto the Thutong and DoE websites. PDEs will receive copies of the book on CD and can print copies for schools in their province.

Matric Matters, a supplement which appears weekly in the Independent Newspapers, will be linked to the Maths 911 books. In addition, support will be provided on DSTV on the Mindset programmes.

Matric Matters will also produce two, 48 page supplements of Maths and Science Exemplar papers in the 2nd and 3rd terms.

Liberty Life will also produce Maths 911 for Grade 10 learners. These will be available electronically in the second term. Provinces may print copies for their schools.

A Physical Science book for Grade 12 is being developed and will also be available electronically on the Thutong and DoE websites in the second term. They may be printed by PDEs.

  1. SABC Education

The Department of Education together with SABC will launch a revision programme for Grade 11 and 12 learners in Mathematics, Mathematics Literacy, Physical Science, English (First Additional Language), Accounting, Life Orientation and Life Sciences on SABC 1, Monday to Friday, from 14h00 to 15h00 starting 1st June 2009.

Additional lesson support will be provided on the Thutong and DoE websites.

  1. Thutong website

Subject Advisors at the Department of Education will continue to maintain individual learning spaces for the various subjects on the Thutong website.

A special space on the Thutong website has been created for support for Grade 12 learners in 2009. This space will comprise messages from the Minister, advocacy, current news, a countdown to the examinations, exemplar examination papers and tips on how to prepare for the examinations as well as the Examination Timetable.

OTHER FORMS OF SUPPORT IN 2009

The DoE will continue, in collaboration with PDEs, to provide training for teachers on content for grades 10 to 12. The DoE will also monitor schools and provinces to ensure appropriate and targeted support is provided.
