PLEASE READ ALL INFORMATION IN THIS DOCUMENT AS WELL AS THE SOLO AND ENSEMBLE PORTIONS OF THE CONSTITUTION AND CONTEST RULES 2017-2018.

The entry fee for solos and small ensembles is $9 per student entry. Entries submitted after the entry deadline will be assessed a $25 LATE FEE for each student entered in each event in addition to the $9 entry fee.

The entry fee for all Medium Ensembles is $75 per group.

To prepare entries for solo & ensemble contest, consult the current copies of the Constitution and Contest Rules and the Prescribed Music List. The Constitution and Contest Rules may be viewed on the internet at the State UIL website. The PML may be viewed at the State UIL website and it is also available to you by logging into the online entry section of our Region 8 website.

ALL ENTRIES MUST COMPLY WITH THE RULES AND ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AS STATED IN THE CURRENT CONSTITUTION AND CONTEST RULES HANDBOOK.

NEW FOR 2018: All vocal solos will be listed under event code number 108. There will be no designation for Treble or Tenor-Bass. However, all solos must be performed in the intended register.

SELECTED EXCERPTS FROM THE CONSTITUTION DEALING WITH SOLO & ENSEMBLE:

Seventh and Eighth Grade Students. “In composite organizations (5A-4A-3A-2A-A), a seventh or eighth grade student may compete in a small ensemble provided that the majority of the ensemble members are in grades 9-12…” (See section 1108)

“Medium ensembles shall consist of a minimum of 11 and a maximum of 24 performers with no more than 2 players per part (winds and percussion)… 4players per part (strings)… 8 to a part (vocal)…” (See Section1109, page 106-107.) Repertoire should be comparable to Class 1 ensemble repertoire.” Medium ensembles may enter the Region Solo and Ensemble Contest but will not advance to State.

Students must perform the selection shown on the entry form. “Music selections listed on the entry form become program requirements for the solo and/or ensemble performance unless the contest chair is officially notified of selection changes seven days prior to the first day of the contest.(See Section 1108)

MUSIC SUBSTITUTION RULE FOR ENSEMBLE CONTEST SELECTIONS

Any instrumentation substitution noted in the score may be performed. Directors may not make this determination on their own. It must be noted in the published score. This applies to all instrumental ensembles.

The event code will not change.

VIRTUOSO CLASSIFICATION FOR WINDS, PERCUSSION AND STRINGS

A limited number of Class 1 solos for each instrument are classified “Virtuoso” and do not need to be memorized in order to advance to TSSEC. This listing of repertoire is available at the State UIL Website (

IMPORTANT: PROCEDURES FOR CERTIFICATION TO THE TEXAS STATE SOLO AND ENSEMBLE CONTEST

Soloists who wish to qualify for the State Solo and Ensemble Contest must perform by memory at the Region Solo and Ensemble Contest or perform a selection from the “Virtuoso” solo list.

  1. A solo contestant will not have to declare his/her intent to perform by memory until the time ofperformance. The contestant will inform the judge upon entering the room that he/she will perform by memory.
  1. The judge will record on the comment sheet whether the performance was by memory, M, or not memorized, NM.
  1. The Contest Chairman will verify the written rating and the M or NM notation.

4. The rating on judges’ comment sheets for solos and ensembles to be certified for TSSEC should be 1C.

Directors must retain the original or a copy of the comment sheet for each solo or ensemble certified to TSSEC. At State Solo and Ensemble Contest, all soloists must have a copy of the Region Contest comment sheet in their possession. Each contestant will show his/her sheet to the monitor before entering the room to perform.

Entry fees should be mailed prior to the contest date. However, if your fees are going to be later than that, MAIL them anyway. PLEASE DO NOT BRING ENTRY FEE CHECKS WITH YOU TO THE CONTEST. Print your Form 1, have an administrator sign it, and bring it with you on the day of contest.
