PRESCRIPTIVE CLINICAL NURSING SKILLS PRACTICE
Catalog Description:
84- Prescriptive Clinical Nursing Skills Practice 0.5 – 1.0 unit
(May be repeated three times)
Emphasis is on gaining experience in practicing and refining selected clinical skills used in the delivery of nursing care to a client in the acute care or community based setting. Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Nursing 55 or the equivalent (completed with a grade of “C” or higher). 27 to 54 total hours Skills Laboratory.
Prerequisite Skills:
Before entering the course the student should be able to demonstrate competency in:
1. handwashing;
2. principles of body mechanics;
3. observing and documenting intake and output
4. applying Ace wraps
5. applying restraints safely;
6. measuring height and weight;
7. describing the function of vitamins and minerals in the human body;
8. assessing the nutritional adequacy of diets;
9. integrating concepts related to cultural diversity and spirituality in client care;
10. applying basic organizational skills;
11. applying basic principles of professionalism;
12. discussing principles of safety involved in client care;
13. describing and applying principles of the nursing process;
14. developing a nursing care plan;
15. proper charting and reporting skills;
16. maintaining client confidentiality;
17 discussing the implication of nursing care as it incorporates physical characteristics of human growth and development from infancy to middle adulthood;
18. discussing the application of nursing care to the several stages of emotional and psychosocial development according to Erikson and Freud.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate ability to:
1. exhibit mastery of prescribed clinical skills;
2. pass an examination in the Skills Lab (with a score of 75% or better) which consists of selected or prescribed clinical skills.

Course Content:
1. Skills Lab practice of selected or prescribed psychomotor skills included in the following courses:
a. Nursing 55 (Fundamentals of Nursing);
b. Nursing 59 (Nursing Care of the Childbearing Family);
c. Nursing 60A (Adult Health I).
Methods of Presentation:
1. Written prescription of selected clinical skills needing practice
2. Audio-visual assignments (including virtual clinical experiences)
3. Reading assignments
4. Demonstration/return demonstration of selected clinical skills
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. Typical Assignments
a. Using the nursing process in a case study, student will develop a nursing diagnosis and a goal
b. Student will perform math calculations for fractional doses, using work sheets with 90% accuracy
c. After viewing a videotape of a selected psychomotor skill, student will use critical thinking in determining the order of steps to take in implementing that skill
2. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress
a. Maintain required attendance in Skills Lab
b. Written examinations
c. Final Skill examination
