School Site Council Meeting

February 4, 2010

Members Present: Christine Collins, Irene French, Kelli Jones, Erica Thorup, Scott Kecken, Alix Bearman, Isabelle Reyes-Perez, Laura Chardiet, Bessy Reyna

Members Absent: Becky Godbey

Meeting Called to Order at 3:20

Approval of Minutes Minutes of January 7, 2010 meeting were approved as written. Motion by Isabelle and seconded by Alix. Motion carried unanimously.

Principal’s Report

o  Helping Hands for Haiti--$1700 raised, article in Culver City News

o  District Spelling Bee Monday 2/8

Safety Committee

o  La Ballona Elementary School Emergency Plans

·  Safety information in each classroom, available for substitutes.

·  Student Request and Student Release gates for adults to pick up children.

·  Each staff member has a certain job in case of emergencies (first aid, morgue, search/rescue, staff to stay with students, etc.)

·  Procedures for specific emergencies: earthquake, lock down, fire

·  Communication Procedures

o  Safe School Plan Goals—Action Plan

·  School Climate, Goal 1: At La Ballona, we foster caring relationships between students and noon duty aides and other supervisors on the playground.

·  School Climate, Goal 2: La Ballona students are respected and valued as individuals who are positively contributing to our school community. Amy Anderson to hold a parent night to discuss effective strategies for preventing and handling bullying.

·  Physical Environment, Goal 1: Make certain all adults and students who enter the school property know that La Ballona Elementary School is a Tobacco Free Campus.

·  Physical Environment, Goal 2: Students take pride in keeping our campus a place where recycling is a regular practice. Possible assembly about plastics with Alix’s friend. Laura will contact Erica about getting middle school students to help with our recycling program.

Kindergarten Tours

o  First of Kindergarten tours held today. All parents that attended were interested in dual immersion and live in registration area.

o  Three more tours to come.

Dual Language Program in Spanish at La Ballona Orientation Meeting

o  April 21, meeting to be conducted in Spanish

La Ballona Black History Month Program

o  March 3, 10 am

o  Based on poem “On The Pulse of Morning” by Maya Angelou.

Updates

o  Superintendent coming to PTA meeting March 4

o  Booster Club doing Jog-a-Thon March 18 during regular PE times. This is a fund raiser for the school.
