6:30 p.m. / Message from the Principal:
Now that the weather is getting colder, I know that more parents will be driving their children to school and picking them up at the end of the school day. Again, thank you to those drivers who always cooperate with our pick-up and drop off procedure. This is the safest plan for all of the students and adults who are with their students.
It is necessary that all drivers follow our system as well as practice legal and safe driving practices. The following is a short summary of the procedures.
1. If possible, students should walk to and from school.
2. Unless drivers park their vehicles in legal parking places and walk their student to school property or pick them up after school, the drop off/pick up route shown below is to be followed.
3. Students who are dropped off in the back parking lot are able to enter the building using any back door – they do not have to walk around to the front or side of the building.
4. No student should be dropped off or picked up on Lakeland or Summit.
5. The drop off/pick up line is always single file. The parking lot is not a cut through between Lakeland and Summit.
Thank you – as you are aware, we need everyone’s cooperation in this extremely important matter.
IMPORTANT REMINDER
If you have not scheduled a conference with your child’s teacher, please call the school office as soon as possible. Conferences are during the evenings of November 11th and 12th, all day on the 12th, and during the morning of Friday, the 13th. These conferences are important times for parents to receive their children’s report cards and discuss their progress in school.

DISTRICT MESSAGE:

Some of the unseasonably cool weather we experienced last month has reminded us that winter is on its way. With Northeast Ohio’s share of severe winter weather, it’s important to remind everyone that while the district believes every day in school is critical for a student’s success, there will be times when the weather makes traveling to and from school unsafe and schools must be closed. The safety of our students is first and foremost in making such a decision.

In the event the schools do close, parents and guardians will be notified at their home via our AlertNow calling system. Other ways to find out about the schools’ status are listening to the local TV and radio stations, which will broadcast the information, checking the district web site at www.lakewoodcityschools.org, and calling the district’s School Closing Hotline at 227-5708.

We are aware that there are times when parents will disagree with the district’s decision to keep schools open during inclement weather. If this is the case, parents always have the option to keep their child home. That day will be regarded as an excused absence for the student and students will be allowed to make up any work missed. Please call your child’s school absence line to let the school know your child will not be attending due to the bad weather.

FLU UPDATE:

The seasonal and H1N1 flu is now proliferating throughout Northeast Ohio schools, including those in Lakewood. Please make sure to read “Seasonal and H1N1 Flu: A Guide for Parents” included in this newsletter for additional guidance during this unusual flu season.

New Ohio Law Requires Boosters for All Kids Who Meet

Age, Weight and Height Guidelines

By Diane Suchetka, The Plain Dealer

Ohio's new booster-seat law goes into effect Wednesday, October 8, 2009. That means children who are 4, 5, 6 or 7 years old, weigh more than 40 pounds and are less than 4 feet 9 inches tall must now sit in booster seats -- and use seat belts -- whenever they ride in a car.

These aren't the seats with built-in harnesses that restrain infants and toddlers. Booster seats are designed to provide older children a lift so that a car's seat belt fits them properly and keeps them safe.

Under the new law, children who meet the age, weight and height guidelines must be in boosters no matter who's driving. That means grandparents and caregivers have to make sure they use them, too.

You can find the seats at discount and other stores for less than $20, but many cost more. (Some deluxe models come with extras, including leopard-print covers and cup holders.)

Even though the law takes effect this week, law enforcement officers will just issue warnings until April 7. After that, they can ticket drivers. A first offense will cost $25 to $75 plus court costs.

For more information on all types of child safety seats, check out Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital's Injury Prevention Center Web site.

If you'd like someone to make sure your child's seat fits him or her properly, there's an online list of Cleveland-area places that offer the service.

You can also get answers to your questions by calling Rainbow's Car Seat and Safety Store Hotline at 216-844-2277.
