DESCRIPTION:

The topic was Desktop Editing.

There was a social gathering before the meeting, with refreshments sponsored by FotoKem. The event was held at the DreamWorks Animation Campus in Glendale CA, in one of their theaters.

Presentations were made from both users and manufacturers of three commonly used desktop editing software systems. These were Adobe Premier, Apple Final Cut Pro and Sony Vegas. Each of the presenters shared experiences using the systems, and also talked about some of their strengths and weaknesses. After the presentations a Q&A session with the audience took place for about 25 minutes.

Douglas Spotted Eagle shared some exciting skydiving footage he had recently shot and edited with Vegas. He also demonstrated some of the extensive audio capabilities.

Michael and Jacob described how Adobe Premiere is being used, and how they see the product evolving.

Stephen Beres gave an excellent description of how Plaster City Post has adopted Final Cut Pro, and an extensive Storage Area Network to support their many on-line finishing rooms. Keith Hatounian of Apple explained in more detail how Apple sees final cut in the Hollywood community, and addressed questions such as how is Apple’s recent acquisition of Final Touch going to affect the product.

During the Q&A afterward the future of post production, and how the terms on-line and off-line are merging were discussed. Other people asked about 24 frame editing support, and how systems might be configured to be used in a student environment.

The meeting concluded at approximately 9:40PM PST.
