Enhancing the Patient Financial Experience Through Effective Financial Communication
Presented by: Suzanne Lestina, FHFMA, CPC
Vice President, Revenue Cycle Innovation
AvadyneHealth
Insurance companies are covering less and less of the total hospital bill, with patient out-of-pocket expenses increasing due to higher deductibles, coinsurance and copays. Patients are demanding more information regarding their services and revenue cycle leaders and staff need to have the skills to meet these new patient demands.
As third party payments continue to decline, hospitals must take a renewed interest in improving their self-pay processes, including developing comprehensive up front patient communications. Healthcare financial managers can improve financial outcomes while creating a positive patient experience through effective and comprehensive financial clearance processes.
Today’s session will focus on enhancing the skills of staff the engage patients in effective financial communications.
Key learning objectives:
Understanding the Need for Financial Clearance
  • Explain how current healthcare and economic trends impact our patients
  • Recognize the factors that are increasing the patient’s cost for healthcare
  • Understand the benefits of financial clearance to patients and providers
Determining Financial Responsibilities
  • Explain the purpose of anticipating charges
  • Understand how 3rd party benefits are identified and applied
  • Recognize the importance of calculating financial responsibility
Engaging the Patient in Effective Financial Negotiations
  • Understand the laws and regulations related to Financial Clearance
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills
Audience: Revenue cycle leaders, management and staff that engage patients in financial discussions.
SPEAKER BIO:In this role, Suzanne works on executing strategies that will lead the industry in next-generation revenue cycle concepts. In addition, leveraging innovative tools and technology, Suzanne will helpcustomers implement change that will transform their revenue cycles and help them achieve positive outcomes.

EMV (Chip Card) and Medical Payments
Presented by: Derek DePuydt
Apogee Payment Systems
Hospitals, clinics and doctors offices need to become aware of the looming October 1, 2015 shift in liability for businesses that are not in compliance with new EMV card payment standards. The new EMV standards affect every business that accepts credit or debit cards as a form of payment. The implementation of new EMV standards for credit and debit cards has been underway for some time now, but most businesses who accept these types of payments are not currently EMV compliant and may not even understand the requirement.
In our presentation we will provide important details about EMV compliance and its financial impact, including
  • What EMV is and what the new compliance standards mean
  • What the EMV standards implementation timeline looks like
  • How the EMV standards will improve payments security
  • What changes will be required for equipment and software used in accepting payments
  • What the “shift in liability” means for the business offices of medical providers
  • What the implications are for businesses that are not compliant by October 1, 2015
  • How to ensure that everything that can be done, is being done to prepare for EMV compliance
With our in-depth knowledge of the world of electronic payments and our experience serving the financial needs of medical providers, we can provide an interesting and insightful presentation on EMV for your attendees.
