Miss Smith / Science-Humans and Animals / Year Four (8-9)
Date/Duration / Learning Objective / Activities / Resources / Assessment
Lesson 1 / To be able to identify how the teeth aid the digestive process
To be able to make predictions
To be able to record results / As a class look at a collection of food. Ask the children in pairs to sort them into groups. Let them select the criteria. (use flash cards peanuts, bread, crisps, apples, sweets) Pool ideas.
Direct discussion onto chewing food. What happens to the food as you chew? How does it change? What kinds of foods need most chewing? Which teeth do you use for certain foods? Which teeth do you use for biting and for chewing? What does your tongue do when you are chewing?
Ask the children to think up an investigation title for the class to carry out.
Direct classification and make predictions on ….Foods that need lots of chewing
Foods that don’t need chewing
Foods that need some chewing
Decide as a group how we will carry it out
In science groups decide what they will need ? Discuss as a class fair testing
How will we record the results? Let more able devise their own tables for results if time. If short of time give all a possible way to record.
Give out results sheet
Carry out the test. Let the children get their own equipment. Remind them other groups need to share.
Record results. Count the number of chews needed before they swallow.
Discuss what they have learnt. It could be anything from this session i.e. fair testing, etc Write about what they have leant.
Complete conclusion sheet x4 levels
/ Flash cards x16 sets peanuts, bread, crisps, apples, sweets
Pieces of card for classification
Peanuts
bread
crisps
apples
sweets
Plates
Prediction sheet x4 levels
Results table

Results for the Chewing Investigation

Food / Prediction / Amount of Chews
1st 2nd Average / Teeth Used

To find the average add the amount of chews taken in both tests together and divide by the number of tests

46+54=100, 100 divide by 2=50
