Wednesday, January 5, 2011 Edition #21

Dear Cathedral Parents,

I wish to welcome your children back to our school days for second semester and you to the more “regular schedule” of the school year. As you know, second semester began on Tuesday, January 4th – a new beginning for each of our students.

On Saturday, January 8th, I am looking for volunteers (students and adults) to help with taking down our Advent/Christmas decorations from the school. We will meet from 9:00 a.m. to noon, but I would like to have people RSVP to me so I have an idea of how many to expect. You may reach me at or at 317/968-7337. Thank you for your intent and consideration.

I wish to welcome you to join us for morning Mass from 7:00 – 7:30 p.m. any day that is convenient for you. What a nice way to being the day – at liturgy and with your child! We do have a Communion Service on Monday and a liturgy on Tuesday – Friday at that time. (See mass listings in this and every Parent Email.) If we happen to have an all-school Mass, it is from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. for Holy Days and Feast Days. You are always welcome to attend these liturgies with us.

Mass Information:

From the Desk of the Chaplain ~ Daily Mass is offered in the Chapel at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Fr. Munshower encourages members of the Cathedral Family to contact him to have a mass said in memory of a loved one. If you are not able to pay the $10 Mass stipend, you may still submit an intention for our daily Mass. Please contact Fr. Munshower at 968-7362 for details and arrangements. Father also requests that, if you contract a Mass, that someone from your family tries to be in attendance on that day.

Communion Services and Masses begin at 7:00 a.m. in the Cathedral Chapel.

At Mass on Wednesday morning, Father Munshower asked all of us to pray for the Coptic Christians in Egypt and Ethiopia. This is a branch of Christianity that will celebrate their Christmas this coming Friday. In Egypt this week one of t heir churches was bombed during a service, killing 21 people. Last year, on Coptic Christmas Eve, January 6, gunmen killed six Copts as they were leaving services in Egypt. When checking on the Internet for more information, it seems that there are also concerns in many European nations, such as Germany. May we keep our fellow Christians in prayer at this time!

Congratulations to Nicholas Hanahan (’14), who is a competitive fencer and will be participating in a competition in Dallas on January 15th, 16th and 17th. Nick, good luck!

Congratulation to Ellis Thompson (’14) who has been accepted as a Student Ambassador and who will be travelling to Italy, Sicily, and Greece this coming summer. Ellis was nominated anonymously, was one of 200 students considered for this honor, went through four interviews, and is one of the 66 students chosen to participate. Ellis, we are very proud of your achievement and are a bit jealous of the upcoming travel!

Congratulations to Dillon Paul (’14), who has been speed-skating for a year and participated in his first meet at the 43rd Annual Gateway Speed-skating Championships in St. Louis, MO on 1/2/2011. He placed 2nd in 444m 1:07.769 speed time, 3rd in 500 m 1:40.87 speed time, 3rd in 333m :51.203 speed time and 3rd 611m.Third place Super star over all. He represented CHS and is a member of Elite Speed Program in Columbus, IN.

Thank you for your participation in the Marion/Hamilton County Lilly Community Scholarship nomination process. The Scholarship Committee had a difficult task of selecting two Marion nominees and one Hamilton nominee from an extremely talented pool of students. The nominees have been selected and are: (Marion County): Emily Pollom and Aly Ricker and (Hamilton County): Allison Loew.

Four Columbia Theater students, including Thomas Graham (‘10), performed with Sabin Elementary students for many VIP's during December. Columbia University’s President Crater hosted a party honoring Center for Community Arts Partners (CCAP) for the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program (NAHYP) Award they just received from Michelle Obama at the White House. Audience members included Columbia's Provost, Steve Kapelke, major Chicago funders and top representatives of the Illinois Arts Council. Two representatives from the White House flew in just for this performance. This past week, Thomas and his three Theater friends, along with my CCAP students, were invited guests performing at the White House!

Last September, Counselor Ms. Taria Tate married Tyreece Butler. She has waiting until now to ask that we begin addressing her at Mrs. Butler, not Ms. Tate, feeling that her students already had enough confusion when school began. However, her email address and phone number will not change for this year. Mrs. Butler works with freshman and sophomore students with last names beginning with letters O - Z.

An assembly will be held honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King on Friday, January 14th. This day will follow the spirit assembly schedule, but we will move to the Robert V. Welch Student Activity Center after leaving 8th period. The assembly will run from 2:46 – 3:10 p.m. Please feel free to join us if you can at this time.

Parents, register your Freshmen for the PLAN test!

The PLAN is the “pre” ACT test that is designed to help students and their families plan and prepare for future academic and career success. The test will be given on Saturday, February 12 at 8am here at Cathedral in the SLC.

The cost to register for this test is $11. Registration deadline is January 24.

Please contact Mrs. Butler (formerly Ms. Tate) to register or for additional questions.

Reminder: It states in the Blue Book that students need to be called in by 9:30 am. Parents/Guardians should be aware that if they are calling after 9:30a.m., they must speak to an actual person to insure that their students attendance record is accurately updated and they should especiallyspeak to a live person if they are calling after 9:30am to request an early dismissal. Many freshman students are telling their parents to just come in to the front office and we will call them out of class. This is disruptive to the classroom and it is not the way we do this at Cathedral.

Class Rings and Cathedral School Jackets:

Bell’s School Services is willing to do a second order for these jackets. Mrs. Orlando, Bell’s representative, will be in the cafeteria this Thursday, January 6th for ring resizes and jacket reorders during all lunches. If you are interested in a school jacket, be sure to check in with Mrs. Orlando on Thursday, January 6th!
