Request re:
Traffic Enforcement Officers
Response:
Thank you for your email, which has been dealt with under the terms of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. Please accept my apologies for the delayed response.
I have checked with the relevant departments and can confirm the following:
1. At the 31.03.2011 there were 3025 police officers in Force
2. At the 31.03.2011 there were 128 Road Policing Officers in Force. For the previous years, the figures are:
2006/07 - 117
2007/08 - 122
2008/09 - 127
2009/10 - 129
3. The planned number of officers for 2012 is 2973, but this is subject to change, depending on the budget, which has yet to be set.
4. I am afraid that I unable to provide the number of planned Road Policing Officers for 2012. This figure has not yet been set, as the budget is not known at this point in time and there is ongoing collaborative working with other forces.
5. As above, the budgets have not been set yet, therefore I must answer these last two questions under section 17 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002: notice that information is not held.
Request re:
Thefts from Schools
Response:
Thank you for your email which has been dealt with under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.
Unfortunately, due to how we record crimes on our system, it is not possible to provide you with accurate statistics of the number of theftsthat took place on school premises. When crimes are recorded, they are given a 'locus' address, this refers to the locality in which the crime occurred. Consequently, in terms of a school, crimes that took place within the building, within the grounds, outside the gates, or within the vicinity of the school e.g. on the roadway outside, will all be given the same locus of the school. Consequently, when we tried to collate the information you have requested, it became clear that crimes were being returned that did not occur in school premises but only within their locality and, unfortunately, the only way to clarify whether a crime took place specifically within aschool premise would be tomanually consult each individual crime report. This is a considerable task which would, unfortunately, invoke the cost exemption provided under section 12 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002: Excessive cost of compliance.
That said, if you would like to receive statistics on the number of crimes that have had their locus recorded as a school, I am able to provide this. However, it should be underlined thatthis information will contain thefts thattook place in and around the school and might not be linked to the school itself. You might also wish tonote that the information willcontain crimes that have been reported outwith school hours and/or on weekends which, again, might not be directly linked to the school.
Request re:
Knife Attacks
Response:
(See Attachment 1)
Thank you for your email which has been dealt with under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.
Please find attached the figures relating to the number of violent crimes involving a knife or bladed weapon. In order to supply you with the information I carried out a search of our crime recording system for all Group 1 crimes (i.e. crimes of violence) and thereafter searched the MO field using the words knife, blade and weapon. I would like to point out that the MO field is a free text field and therefore the figures only reflect the number of crime reports whereby the officer has entered the aforementioned words.
It may be worth noting that the figures relate to the number of crime reports created and not the number of accused. For example, the same individual may have been charged with robbery and thereafter been involved in a separate incident whereby they were charged with serious assault.
As you require to know whether a knife/bladed weapon was presented or used to physically attack the victim, I have indicated this in the ‘weapon used’ column and also stated where the weapon has been held to the body of the victim although they were not injured as a result.
Request re:
Crimes of a Sexual Nature
Response:
Thank you for your email, which has been dealt with under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. I will answer your questions in turn.
1. The total number of crimes of a sexual nature recorded in 2011 so far and each of the previous two calendar years.
2011 – 629
2010 – 1100
2009 – 1106
2. The total number of crimes of a sexual nature recorded in 2011 so far and each of the previous two calendar years where the victim was aged under 16.
2011 – 171
2010 – 244
2009 – 185
3. The total number of crimes of a sexual nature recorded in 2011 so far and each of the previous two calendar years where the victim was male.
2011 – 92
2010 – 133
2009 – 150
4. The total number of crimes of a sexual nature recorded in 2011 so far and each of the previous two calendar years where the victim was female.
2011 – 455
2010 – 825
2009 – 832
There will be a discrepancy with the totals for males and females not matching up to the grand total for the year, as some victims’ sex will not have been added to the report.
5. Details of the exact offences recorded in 2011 so far and each of the previous two calendar years and on how many occasions they occurred e.g. 20 counts of rape.
Please find the breakdown you have requested below. Please note that these figures relate to crime reports created, rather than individual crimes. For example, if an individual was identified as having abused a person over a period of time, there may be a more than one report for that accused. Therefore the number of reports will be higher than the number of accused involved.
