Audiologist

General Scope of Responsibility

The Audiologist is expected to maintain an optimum audiological environment for all assigned students. He/She must demonstrate a sound theoretical knowledge of the principles of audiology, amplification, and the effective use of residual hearing.

The Audiologist must be able to relate well to students, parents and the representatives of participating school systems.

Soundbridge provides educational audiological services to students throughout the State of Connecticut. The audiologist will be responsible for providing direct services to students within assigned school districts.

Relationship Within the Organization

The Audiologist shall be directly responsible to the Audiology Supervisor.

Specific Responsibilities

1.  Conduct comprehensive and periodic audiological assessments for each assigned student (birth through age 21 years).

2.  Administer all specific audiological tests to evaluate peripheral or central auditory problems.

3.  Evaluate the appropriateness of amplification for assigned students and make recommendations for technology that will support optimal auditory access to spoken language.

4.  Advise school administrators and educators regarding the selection and purchase of auditory training equipment, and further be responsible for the electroacoustic evaluation of such equipment once it is placed within the classroom.

5.  Assess and monitor classroom acoustics and the proper use of amplification equipment.

6.  Participate in and/or conduct workshops to Preschool or Academy parents and/or Soundbridge staff.

7.  Prepare for and conduct inservice workshops in CREC member towns for teachers and other staff members on all areas of educational audiology.

8.  Make impressions for earmolds and teach earmold care to staff members, students and parents.

9.  Complete audiological evaluations as required on students referred for evaluation.

10.  Participate in Diagnostic Evaluation Unit reporting and conference process.

11.  Conduct the Audiological Maintenance Service as required in terms of specified contract services.

12.  Conduct the Audiological Processing Management as required in terms of specified contract services.

13.  Convey information to Audiology Technicians regarding inventory of hearing aids, loan equipment and FM rental equipment.

14.  Participate in parent guidance and audiological counseling programs.

15.  Maintain up to date records, communicate audiological recommendations to parents. Write reports on student audiological status including yearly summaries as well as reports on each test procedure, following departmental guidelines.

16.  Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of all aspects of the audiology program.

17.  Monitor new developments and research in the profession and share information with colleagues.

18.  Conduct audiological research when possible and discuss its significance with staff and community leaders.

19.  Perform other duties appropriately assigned by the Assistant Director or Director.

Desirable Experience and Training

Education: M.A., AuD., or Ph.D. with Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Audiology or its equivalent.

Experience: Previous experience in an educational setting is desirable.

Other: Genuine interest in serving the needs of students and the ability to operate within the philosophy of the program.
